Pixel Car Art _ Automotive chat _ 85 MkII Jetta GL

Posted by: duncan Apr 28 2013, 07:13 PM

Long story short: I don't have enough time between school and work for the ghia, so I sold it, doubled my money, and bought a friends 1985 5 speed Jetta.
Pretty clean, solid 3 owner car. Paint is faded, interior is faded, and door panels are not in the best shape in the back, but I got an extra front seats, rear seat, and door panels with the car. Also got a ton of extra brake parts to switch the rear from Disk, back to Drum.
It runs and drives good, but no power steering kinda sucks. The O2 sensor had the wire cut and I cant find out where It goes, and the Cold start needs tinkering with. Nonetheless I'm pretty exited, and hey, I can actually drive it.

Why would you go from disk to drum?

Posted by: uiui Apr 30 2013, 09:14 PM

He means opposite lewl anyway jetta looks simple but good congrats on your buy toothygrin.gif

Posted by: duncan Apr 30 2013, 11:56 PM

It has Disk at the moment, but you need special E-Brake cables for it to work on a Mk2. It's cables from a Mk1 Scirocco or something that I need, and they're apparently pretty rare/expensive. And just my luck, they don't reproduce them. Everything I need to switch it back to drum came with the car, and it's going to need new brakes sometime anyways. I'm not too thrilled, but I found myself wishing I had an E-Brake more than I thought.

I already have plans on lowering it once I fix the engine troubles. I was considering maybe some Patec coilovers. They ride nice, and they can go pretty low :

Other than that, Ill powdercoat the rims, and roll them untill I can find something better.
don't know for sure on the rims yet, but whatever

Just use bbs lm or schmidt th something like that is badass for this.

Posted by: JoviBlue May 1 2013, 09:21 AM

Go for something completely out of the ordinary like S13 stock rims or something, idk what the pcds are on either but yeah

These were the cosmics I was thinking about.

Nice choice man good.gif

Posted by: duncan May 6 2013, 04:12 AM

At the moment, the car is broke down in the driveway. It had a bad intake leak, so we replaced the ripped boot, and now it acts like the injectors are bad. So here's to not having a car for the next week. facepalm.gif

Anyways, I did a little research, and it looks like Racelands are better than Patec coils. They're a little expensive, but apparently the difference is massive, and worth stepping up.

Posted by: Madset. May 6 2013, 04:28 AM

just put a 12a rotary in it

Posted by: duncan May 6 2013, 04:44 AM

Thought I'd add some more pictures:

Yesterday was a Bicycle show I was going to, and I had the car all loaded up, just to find out it wont run.

Also found that the radio I have already fits the existing radio hole.

Will be bumpin soon.

such a cool looking car

it even has rear camber

Posted by: AndrewGMC May 6 2013, 05:02 AM

damn boot rack instead of roof rack thats cool

Posted by: duncan May 6 2013, 05:20 AM

Sketchy $5 rack from Goodwill till I can afford a proper roof rack.

Nice car man! I love mk2s!

Posted by: Hellrazr May 6 2013, 06:15 PM

MK2 good base to start playing with looks like a clean car you got eager.gif

Posted by: duncan May 11 2013, 04:24 AM

So awhile ago I was messing around under the dash, and found a mysterious switch. It didn't do anything so I never thought anything of it. So then we replaced the fuel pump relay, and an intake boot, and was about to replace the fuel pump, when we found the switch is hooked up to the fuel pump, as a kind of "kill switch". So now it starts and runs, but my motor mounts are shot, so I have to get them replaced maybe next week.

Posted by: Madset. May 11 2013, 04:57 AM

im not even joking

I wish ^^

Replaced the front mount last night, and I think the rears are almost dead. So imma wait till I get my new axles and do them both at the same time. But the car runs and drives 10000% better. Better than it ever has while I have had it.
Also went ahead and installed my stereo, and the subwoofers. Need an amp, but i wired them as just speakers but they work.

Thinking about a wood grain steering wheel, and a light up bubble shift knob in the future.

Wait, what?

Sold?!

Posted by: Madset. Jun 3 2013, 03:59 AM

you should of lowered it so it couldnt get on the truck

Posted by: duncan Jun 3 2013, 05:11 AM

Not sold: Just out of commission.

Transmission mount bracket broke, and the transmission mount broke, CV Axles toast, Shift linkage messed up, not to mention the giant rip in one of the intake lines.

I have all the parts to replace but the trans mount bracket, and I can't replace any of that stuff till the new bracket is in. So the hunt is on for one :/

Posted by: Madset. Jun 3 2013, 05:54 AM

sucks broseph

if you had lowered it no problems would of ever happened

I also have a bad leak in my trunk when ever it rains. I can't find where the waters coming in, but I guess hardwood floors are going to have to wait.

Posted by: Myca Jun 3 2013, 12:13 PM

1. Fold the rear seat down and go into trunk, then ask friend make some rain on it.
2. Replace trunk lid seal.

profit!

Posted by: duncan Jun 4 2013, 02:50 AM

The rear seat doesn't fold down, and the trunk seal is in excellent condition. I was thinking about putting some news paper in there and spray it down with the hose and see where its coming from.

Ordered a transmission mount bracket so hopefully it will be here soon.
Also thinking about some Raceland coilovers once everything is mechanically sound. Reviews seem to be good and they are about $300 ish.

Posted by: Madset. Jun 4 2013, 03:11 AM

stop doing burnouts

lol

Posted by: duncan Jun 4 2013, 03:26 AM

I did one once I first got it, but I stopped after that cause I don't need to be burning my tires up, and apparently my transmission mounts.

Posted by: Madset. Jun 4 2013, 03:37 AM

lock the front diff then you will drift proper

Thats exactly what I thought too but didn't post. lmao

Posted by: Rywired Jun 7 2013, 10:12 PM

Awww i was looking forward for the ghia, o well still a nice pick up though.

So no other cars you can swap the rear disks with?

Posted by: duncan Jun 9 2013, 04:50 AM

The Ghia would have been cool, and I miss it, but with still being in High School, work, and the car being 30 minuets away just wasn't the best combination to get it done anytime soon. I hope Ill get another one later on. Maybe an older one too.

Posted by: duncan Jun 11 2013, 08:45 PM

Tried replacing the seats, but the rain came out of nowhere, and come to find out, the passenger seat is different than what was there, so Ill need to weld in some brackets or something.
But for now, unmatching seats.

plus my Axles, Alternator, shift linkage, motor and transmission mounts, and the transmission mount bracket is waiting to be installed.

Posted by: Myca Jun 13 2013, 10:02 AM

passenger's seat is dirty as hell

what about bus duncan?

Posted by: duncan Jun 14 2013, 03:18 AM

Lol, the bus is sitting in the garage. I don't have 10 grand to dump on a vehicle at the moment, so I figured let it climb in value and ill sell it in a few years.

Everything but the alternator was replaced, and car is running and driving, but I need new tires. Wires showing..

Posted by: Myca Jun 14 2013, 06:59 AM

So what? I saw many people who built their classic car without big amount of money. All you need is enthusiasm and desire to finish restoration.

You probably want to buy all brand new bolt-on parts and then just install them in the car? Right? You can do the most of work yourself for free, or pay for it. It's your choice. smile2.gif

Posted by: duncan Jun 21 2013, 04:09 PM

The bus is basically just a shell. The whole lower 2 feet of the thing is rusted out not to mention the whole rain gutter and surrounding areas all the way around the vehicle would need to be replaced as well. I would have to buy basically half a bus in replacement panels that I would have to cut, trim and weld in myself. Another option is I could buy a donor car, but Almost anything I find would be in better shape or have the same rust issues as mine. Then I have to worry about the motor, transmission, and brake system.
I really want to fix it up, and drive it, but for still being a high school student and living on the edge financially, I don't have the time or the money to tackle a project like that. Hopefully once I'm making better money, and finish up school, I may start working on it.
That's basically why I gave up on the Ghia. I needed a mode of transportation, and I didn't have the time or money to fix it any time soon. Even though it's not exactly what I want; the Jetta runs and drives and gets me where I need to go... Most of the time... toothygrin.gif

Posted by: duncan Oct 4 2013, 01:43 AM

Don't have much pictures at the moment, but I'll get some soon.

Need to roll the fenders, and maybe get some 14" rims so I can go lower.
For now, my front tires rub in the front when I make a tight turn, and my rear tires hit the top of the wheel well.

plus I still have roughly 2" of threads left to go lower.

Ill get some better pictures soon

Yes it does, after market lips are lower

Posted by: duncan Oct 6 2013, 03:56 AM

I'll get an 8v lip before I lower it any more. I'll drag the 16v lip around if it goes any lower.
And the guy sold the BMW rims :/

Posted by: Faяaп. Oct 7 2013, 11:33 PM

Most likely you won't have the money while you are in highschool, but that's the whole coolness in that.

Imagine the feels in 10 or so years when you finally finish something you've been working on bit by bit.
Once you have the money, there is no point in restoring it yourself, you might as well buy one.

I would have a old rusted piece of crap right now if it weren't for a lack of space and #brownparents

I took a few pictures awhile back and I forgot to post em.
Photo Bucket has been giving me nothing but troubles lately.

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo2_zps2343767f.jpg.html

So about a week ago, it's freezing cold, I'm running late for school, and of course my starter doesn't work and the thermostat crapped out the night before. Next thing I know I need a new battery, starter, Distributer cap and rotor, few vacuum lines, sparkplugs, thermoswitch, and now I have a blown head gasket. dash2.gif facepalm.gif

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo4_zpsb95fe7a5.jpg.html

I can't get it to our shop 30 minuets away, so all this has to be done in my gravel driveway.

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo1_zpsae64155e.jpg.html

And to top it all off, It started snowing when I was replacing the thermostat. Fingers frozen, Coolant got all over me, Freezing winds, and the only warm thing I had with me was a heavy flannel. I don't think I have ever been that miserable working on a vehicle.

At the moment, I have yet to install the thermoswitch, Starter, and i'll start replacing the headgasket ASAP.
For now, Ill be rolling in my moms bus:

Those orange things at front fenders is horrible. Red stripe on bumpers would look nice.

Posted by: duncan Dec 12 2013, 06:15 AM

Our whole family basically is.

I hate the side markers too, but I am not gonna shave em.

The car is still out of commission, mainly because I had to order a 1/2" tool that will fit the torque wrench. Hopefully I will get it all done Friday.
Sucks not driving being able to drive it!

Posted by: RAD Dec 12 2013, 06:20 AM

dude just get a new engine

those old mk2 engines are like $3

Posted by: duncan Dec 12 2013, 08:54 PM

The engine I have is not bad. Any other engine I get will unfortunately have very similar problems :/

Posted by: RAD Dec 13 2013, 04:32 PM

wait nvm I just noticed you were gonna fix it

my friend drove his altima on a blown hg for awhile and it blew up lol. thats what I was worried about

Posted by: Henrique. Dec 14 2013, 12:43 PM

Dude, if you change those trims on the bumper, and paint the wheels this would look so much better. I mean, fresh new. Love those jettas, I wish we ever had anything from the golf family before the mk3 here in brazil. Hell, we don't even have the Jetta MK3, lol.

Good luck with the engine, hope you manage to pull it out driving again.

Those have been some of the top things on the "To Do List". I will eventually get the rims powder coated soon, and the faded bumper trim annoy the heck outta me. There is chrome trimming at the auto parts store that people use, and I was gonna try that out.

Posted by: duncan Dec 16 2013, 01:26 PM

I've been working on the head gasket replace for about a week now. Mainly because I had to wait on parts/tools to arrive.
So far I got everything taken apart and cleaned, and all the new parts ready to go on.
While I was taking off the exhaust, some of the studs came out and we don't have new studs and new self-locking bolts. Hopefully I'll get them today.

Most of the coolant ports are blocked and clogged at the head gasket. Hopefully that's the only place they're clogged.

Also found the source of the exhaust leak

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo4_zpse56347e1.jpg.html

The injectors are also stuck because the seals have dried up and became hard. I sprayed some WD-40 to try to soften the seals up, but they are still almost impossible to get out. I read someone had to use a pair of channel locks and a crowbar to get theirs out, may try that.

Is that sludge clogging up the coolant port or rust globs?

Posted by: duncan Mar 22 2014, 03:30 PM

It actually was rust globs in the coolant ports. I tried cleaning i out as much as possible, and it doesn't get as hot as it used to. I think the heater core is slightly clogged as well, so that's another thing to add to the list.
I also plan on bringing the wheels down to bare metal and clearing them until I have enough money to get them powder coated.

I am currently trying to acquire either a westy grill, or a 7 slat

dam that headgasket was in terrible shape

Posted by: duncan May 6 2014, 07:39 AM

Slight update:
My tag expired, and the car gets it's first inspection (it never needed one because it's an out of state car). It only needs safety inspection, and of course it failed miserably. So I spent all day today installing new tag lights, replacing the correct horn, get new tires, and put in a new muffler.
The new muffler turned out to be a bigger project than expected due to previous owners custom exhaust work.
http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo2_zpsdd640f56.jpg.html
You can tell where the pipe had broke right at the welds.
So off to o'riley, and picked up a new one.

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo3_zpsd12f4e0a.jpg.html

Not entirely happy with the sound of this one; but it is 100x better than the busted/ripped/rusted out junk that was on it. It is so much quieter, and it almost seems like it runs better (but that's most likely just a placebo effect). It could sound better, but I think it's about as good as it's going to get being a 4 cylinder 1.8L. I was hoping for more of a 2.0 or a vr6 sound trollolololm[1].png

Hopefully it will pass tomorrow so I can renew my plate, but who can say.

Posted by: duncan Sep 18 2014, 06:07 PM

Not much to update, mainly because of life getting in the way, but I did find why it was running terribly.

While doing the motor work, the ISV had got clogged. CIS systems do not like to sit at all. Also, one of the ISV plug wires had been cut and made it run like crap. Now I am getting great gas mileage, and it runs way better.

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo3_zpsceac2661.jpg.html

Still haven't painted the wheels, or fix the dents, or do much anything to the body yet, but I did find a Pizza Hut sign!

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo4_zpsf80623fd.jpg.html

Also thinking about running some hubcaps until I can get some actual work done to them. Also need some skinnier tires. I have 195/50 but would like to get something like 185/45. But again, more money that I don't have at the moment.

http://s475.photobucket.com/user/ghopher0/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo1_zps80bf3f72.jpg.html

Next step is new clutch, rear brake pads, and hopefully find a cheep cat since mine had been hollowed out.
Hopefully I'll have more updates soon.
