Sad news everyone!

As some on here may be aware, the price of petrol in the UK is currently a f**king pisstake, and as a result my dad can't afford to run his beloved Evo any more :'( so he's getting shot of it, probably quite soon in fact. In the meantime he'll need a replacement, obviously. So I ask you, the kind folk of PCA, to give us some suggestions of a replacement. Criteria is;

- Needs to have 4 doors
- Needs to be less than £3,000
- Must be reliable, or at least easy for me and him to fix if needed
- Must be something a little bit special at least, something he can look at and be proud of, you know?

So far we've considered the E36 328i and the 156 2.5 V6

On that note, if anyone fancies buying a fairly cheap Evo V, send me a PM.

Posted by: Mkid Feb 24 2011, 09:05 PM

£3,000?

How much are you planning on selling the Evo for?!

Posted by: Ben.H Feb 24 2011, 09:06 PM

About £5,000, hopefully. Money's not in abundance at the moment so pennies must be saved. We're living like jews at the moment

Posted by: J.red Feb 24 2011, 09:08 PM

I would have thought that evo would be worth a little more than that.

Posted by: Ben.H Feb 24 2011, 09:10 PM

Not in the UK, they're quite cheap, quite good if you're a buyer, not so much as a seller.

Also, in before Ed recommends a Volvo and/or DMC-12 recommends a classic Ford toung.gif

An older MazdaSpeed3? I'm not sure how much they go for there. If not, a normal Mazda3 is still a great car.

Posted by: Ben.H Feb 24 2011, 09:45 PM

MazdaSpeed 3's are still commanding high prices here. Look at this - http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/list.asp?s=987&p=&d=0&min=&max=&y1=&y2=&txt=&px=&xsl=list&pagesize=15&filter=TP&o=q&pc=

I think my dad needs something a bit bigger and geared towards daily driving anyway, no full on sports cars

Posted by: J.red Feb 24 2011, 09:51 PM

So, the price of gas going up is the reason for selling?
doesn't the evo get fairly good gas mileage?
and the goal is to find something with better fuel economy?

Posted by: Ben.H Feb 24 2011, 09:53 PM

Yes, pretty much, my dad lost his job before Christmas so it's been difficult since then really.

You must be kidding, it's probably something like 15mpg or so. Probably a lot less when he boots it.

And yes, something cheaper to buy and run in general.

Posted by: DLuZive Feb 24 2011, 09:56 PM

Oh, that sucks. Our Petrol is going up to, maybe not as high but yea.
Couldn't you have the Evo as a weekend driver or I dunno, that's gay.
You're lucky that Evos are fairly cheap, ours are all around 20k.

Posted by: Mkid Feb 24 2011, 10:05 PM

Look into the normal Mazda3s... They aren't really any smaller then the Evo.

And ya, evos get horrible mileage. I have a brand new evo block and I get 20mpg average

Posted by: J.red Feb 24 2011, 10:09 PM

o.O that sucks.
I would have thought that they could get better mileage while still getting power.
I mean...there are turbo v6's out there that get better mileage than that.

anyways, go for a civic toung.gif great mileage.
And if he were to get say a 2007 civic si, it's still a pretty fun and quick car and the mileage is great.

cav gsi2000 will do 40 on the motorway wink.gif

Posted by: Mkid Feb 24 2011, 10:15 PM

I checked out Mazda3 prices on pistonheads. You MAY be able to get one for under 3,000 if you really negotiated... Or you could go for its older brother and get a Mazda 323.

As for a Civic, For 3,000 he could probably only get like a 2000 model or so, definitely not 2007

Posted by: J.red Feb 24 2011, 10:30 PM

yeah, i forgot about the 3k price limit when i typed that year.

You could maybe find a type r civic for that in an older model. But if you look for just regular civics, you can definitely find one. Maybe up to like 2002 or 2004.

The only down side is that it might be hard to find a bone stock civic if that's what he's looking for. If you're okay with slightly modified though, you've got a huge market.

Posted by: Mkid Feb 24 2011, 10:36 PM

He needs 4 door too so I don't think Type-R would apply.

Posted by: Curtis Feb 24 2011, 11:20 PM

So... i herd thoze fiesta lx's were pretty cool

Posted by: Madset. Feb 25 2011, 05:51 AM

go for one of them there vauxhaul astra diesels or whatever it is is over there in that compact car diesel class froma few years ago.

Posted by: DLuZive Feb 25 2011, 06:45 AM

Holden Cruze Diesel's counterpart

Posted by: ChevyRacer454 Feb 25 2011, 06:53 AM

Chevy Cruze toothygrin.gif

but that's not E3000 though? they're like 16'000 US dollars here for an LS model.

Posted by: Daniel. Feb 25 2011, 12:16 PM

Don't consider that 328. We have a 520 2.2 and we have around 12mpg..

Can't you lease a car? My aunt has a '11 golf diesel, 50 pounds a week, and it's paid off in 3 years.. The new golf is not a bad car, it looks good, and I think it has about the same space as an evo.

Orrrrrr, get an older evo?

Posted by: Mkid Feb 25 2011, 04:47 PM

he already has an older Evo... huh.gif

Posted by: DMC-12 Feb 25 2011, 04:56 PM

And an older car will have less MPG anyway toung.gif

http://www.ridelust.com/mpg-wars-1989-honda-crx-hf-vs-2009-toyota-prius/

not true.

Posted by: Ben.H Feb 25 2011, 06:17 PM

I think some people here are missing the point, my dad can't go for a sports car, neither does he want a bland econobox. (So no to the older Evo and Astra), thanks for the suggestions though, you never know with my dad.

What does everyone think of this?

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C211619/

Bargain and good condition, good service history too

Also, Daniel, my dad leased the Citroen C5 he had before the Evo, and the Nissan Navara he had before that, I don't think it's a route he wants to go down again if I'm honest, and he won't be able to get many decent cars he'd like with his budget

convert evo to gas

do you mean diesel? lol

Posted by: Jolteon Feb 25 2011, 10:28 PM

he means lpg

Posted by: Madset. Feb 25 2011, 10:32 PM

lpgs pretty cheap, and i would believe, if the evo is sucking so much gas its because the way hes driving it

Posted by: Curtis Feb 25 2011, 11:41 PM

List of cheap but fun cars:

Ford Fiesta RS Turbo

Ford Focus ST170

VW Golf R32

Audi S4 (chip, exhaust and filter will see 500bhp easy)

Subaru Legacy

Mazda 6 Sport

All of these are less than £2000
Should be a start

Very cool, get a bike

Some good suggestions, but I can't help but think you're missing the point slightly, he needs something that will return decent MPG. Also, in before "It's fine if you drive it sensibly", it's not, honest.

That said though, look at this

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201101376529851/sort/locasc/usedcars/engine-size-cars/3l_to_3-9l/price-to/4000/fuel-type/diesel/model/e_class/make/mercedes-benz/radius/1500/page/2/postcode/b735dl?logcode=p

Value for money or what eh?

Posted by: DLuZive Feb 26 2011, 02:58 AM

I think you should get one of the Mercs

Posted by: Ben.H Mar 16 2011, 05:45 PM

Well my dad got a new car today, he went for an Alfa Romeo 156, but he decided not to go for the V6 and instead he went for a Twin Spark purely for the benefit of extra MPG. His one is a 2001 X-reg with 74,000 miles and it's painted in fire black, got it with FSH and a year's MOT for £1525. Not a bad buy if I do say so myself, there's a few dings and marks on the body but mechnically it's brilliant and the interior is lovely. Photos soon, but in the mean time have this photo I nabbed off google which is basically identical

Posted by: Daniel. Mar 16 2011, 09:40 PM

f**king loved my uncle's twinspark. Nice buy, congrats smile2.gif

lose the body mods, go for a much subtler lip kit, get some gallardo replica wheels, and you are there my friend

anyway, why do you car about what your dad drives since the blasphemy he performed against fiesta nationally?
