it's a shame they had to crush that R33 though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) really it's not illegal to import and own these cars. they're just hunks of steal and rubber afterall nothing illegal there. you just can't drive it until the model turns 25 years old... the government is nuts :| what can I say

Indeed i thought american laws about vehicles were super lax and just us europeans were getting the anal emission and import treatment? To get a car that wasnt originally sold here to where i live, you have to get it first into the Netherlands, then get it certified in Germany, and then you can finally get it into here, paying tens of thousands in the process.

actually the real problem is that dispute our cars size they are riddled with safety and emissions control systems. our standards are higher then other countries and as such car companies don't see it viable to import various vehicles because it would not be cost efficient to comply with our standards. this is why we don't have Defenders. Skylines, Euro Diesels, etc etc.

as such these cars are not tested and not being tested they're a grey area and considered illega.

or it's now classified as a kit car which would bypass a buttload of laws that would otherwise make it illegal :S

I always thought that the Japanese government had more stringent emissions and safety laws and standards compared to the US. Maybe the big three are afraid that their mid to high end sports cars would not keep up with the Japanese in sells, performance, etc.... Think about it. The US pumped out some s**tty sports cars in the 90's (With the exception of a small hand full). While Japan blossomed with their lineup.
What would perform/sell better. A 90's Corvette or a 90's Skyline? A 90's Mustang or an S15?

Either way. It's great to see that they are finally being allowed in the US.
Isn't the R33 already legal in the US? I see them every now and then.

i dunno never really looked into japanese regulations... but i do know europe has lax regulations that prevent many of their engines and models from coming to america.

we don't get the insanely effecient diesels partially because the EPA is stupid :|

i don't think that's the case. you have to remember Honda and Toyota where the GM and Ford of Japanese cars here. Nissan was more like chrysler. Honda and specifically Toyota did sell a number of sports cars here! Supra Celica MR2 S2000 the Civic Sis and CRXs though that wasn't much a sports car :| anyways maybe the Z cars didn't do as well as Nissan hopped and as such they though the Skyline wsan't worth exporting?

I know this is what has been keeping GM from sending Cadillac to the outback!

Swift it's not just skylines and silvias. NA Accord isn't even same as the japanese one.

"The reason a Skyline is illegal is because of NHTSA, DOT, and EPA regulations. There are a few R32's and R34's that were made compliant by MOTOR-EX in the late 90's early 2000's, but the company was shut down for not performing the necessary modifications on the cars. They were also expensive. After they were shut down, the US government banned all importation of the Skyline. Then later they amended this when a company petitioned for the reinstatement of the import doing the needed crash test to find out what modifications were needed. They were given a confidentiality agreement and the only skylines allowed for import are the R33's manufactured between 06/1996 and 07/1998. The only company that can modify these cars is JK TECHNOLOGIES. Another RI (registered importer) can attempt the modifications but with no access to the results from the a fore mentioned company they have to show that the work is up to the standards set by the US."
