Pixel Car Art _ Automotive chat _ Gaz 21 Volga

Posted by: Myca Jun 16 2013, 07:38 PM

My toy. 1962 Gaz M21 Volga. Was bought few weeks for 1000 Euro, pretty nice condition. Engine works, but oil change wasn't done for 5 last years, so i dont want to start it. Now it waits for registartion and garage. Engine - 2.5 L petrol, 3 speed manual gearbox, approx weight - 1580 kg. 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) - approx 30 sec, max speed 130 km/h.

Comparable american car - 1952 Ford Mainline

And yes, it have more rust than Duncan's bus

totally cool, man. it seems to be getting hard to find 2nd gens around here. (and yeah, i suppose the year is older than '62). good luck!

Posted by: Myca Jun 17 2013, 05:19 AM

@N.OzolS, thanks dude, as you said, it's difficult to find 2 gen even here, in Russia. 1962 (first half) was last year of 2 gen production, chassis №19xxxx

thanks, at first i was thinking about 4.5L v8 engine swap
but decided to keep it original, but make it bit lower with some classic accessories.

Posted by: Madset. Jun 17 2013, 07:01 AM

please for the love of god lower it

Slight reverse rake
Get new lights
Redo the bad interior parts (looking original)
Restore some of the chrome bits
Keep the military-esque paint scheme and rust
Get tidy rims

Cut the chassis, create a Trapezoid type figure in place, slam car, op

Posted by: DLuZive Jun 19 2013, 06:28 AM

or just reset them or flip them or get blocks or bag it

Posted by: Myca Jun 19 2013, 06:42 AM

I know how to do it, 8-10 cm ground clearance would look nice.

Posted by: N.OzolS Jun 19 2013, 07:30 AM

are there any pics of what the suspension ssetup on the pink one was before the ssetup that it has in these pics? because it was low enough already then, i have always loved it

Posted by: Myca Jun 19 2013, 07:39 AM

That was before

Posted by: DLuZive Jun 19 2013, 08:33 AM

wow thats awesome

Posted by: N.OzolS Jun 19 2013, 09:50 AM

yeah i know, just wanted to know how he achieved his first stage of low, before the frame cutting and inverting leafs

Posted by: Myca Jun 19 2013, 09:58 AM

I guess he used classic way - spacers between axle and leaf

Posted by: N.OzolS Jun 19 2013, 10:40 AM

great, thats good, thanks xd.gif

Posted by: KVcustoms Jul 15 2013, 03:53 PM

keep outside as it is, then some chrome wheels on it, lower it till you can barely put your thumb between the ground and the car, and then a full sick interior. Basically, turn it into a ratrod.

Posted by: Myca Jul 17 2013, 04:42 PM

Hour of work, need angle grinder or drill to speed it up

Posted by: AndrewGMC Jul 17 2013, 06:04 PM

2008 Passat 1.8T

Time to show what i'm doing instead of pixel cars

First day at car, removing front body panels: fenders and grill

One does not simply to remove 50 years old rusted bolts and nuts, so had to cut them off with grinder

At the end of first day. Gasser-look

Second day starts

Workspace

That was a nice weekend. Next step is front suspension rebuild.

Posted by: Kubason Oct 30 2013, 09:57 PM

well I wish you not to get frustrated with all the rust, work and money required, because this will be hell of a cool car when finished

Posted by: Myca Nov 3 2013, 06:44 PM

Another weekend spent at car. Today focus was at front suspension

Very bad condition, backslashes?? (dunno how at english) everywhere, suspension plays like drunk russian

Front brakes, not self-adjustable, decided to replace brake cylinders to Gaz-24 one's (self-adjustable). Still be worst car brakes ever made.

First layer of primer was made at evening

Tomorrow front suspension will be fully painted. Ordered some bushings, hope finish front suspension built next weekend.

@Kuba
Calculated total cost of restoration. I expect it around 5000$ or a bit more, of course if i do most of work myself, except paintjob, but who knows, i could try it too.

Total (3/11/13)
Money spent: 560$
Work spent: 79 man-hours

Front suspension is almost done, still need to finish tie rods and stabilizer

Rear axle before

Now it's finished, except brake lines

Plans are for a full resto? or are there going to be some mods (you mentioned different brakes?)

Posted by: Myca Nov 27 2013, 06:00 AM

Thanks dudes

I'll try to keep it authentic as possible

Tie rods workspace

Fuel tank removing

Seems like it was under ground all 60 years

@rust
i dont know where you are, and what you want, but i will find you and i will kill you, bitch

Extra doors at rear panel

Trunk

Spare wheel..

Who the hell decided to place intake and exhaust manifolds side by side?

If you decided to restore classic car in Russia, you gonna have a bad time. Anyways this weekend i'll look for another 21 Volga to get extra spare parts from it and later put in V8 ZMZ big block.

Posted by: please Nov 27 2013, 06:56 AM

o, novv dat 5ound5 like an even nicer plan already! good vvork 5o far dude, good vvork

Posted by: Big Daddy Andy Nov 27 2013, 10:04 AM

damn all that car cancer, but it's looking good

Posted by: Kubason Nov 27 2013, 07:29 PM

wow, seeing all the rust I should consider myself lucky and stop bitching about my car being rusty

Posted by: JoviBlue Nov 27 2013, 07:33 PM

nice to see updates dude

so are you V8 swapping it? And how are you going to repair the rust, like are you getting authentic replacement segments or are you sheet metal rewelding?

Posted by: Myca Nov 28 2013, 07:54 AM

Authentic replacement segments is too expensive for me, and there is one problem - they dont fit because of low quality soviet press forming and each car was individual lol. There is not much part that can be replaced without customization.

V8 will be on another car (3rd series), which i hope to get at this sunday. My 2nd series "Shark" is rare (not much as first "Star") than 3rd series "Whalebone", thats why i dont want to make any mods on it.

Posted by: duncan Dec 2 2013, 09:37 PM

You guys have some awesome cars over there. I always wanted a Lada.

PS Good luck with the rust xd.gif

Posted by: Myca Feb 24 2014, 05:31 PM

Was too cold to work on the body, so i decided spent free time to the interior.

My first interior expirience. Firstly, seats was stripped off

Then painted

Here you can see rear seat layout

Seat frames covered by felt/numdah (dunno how is more correct)

Next step is gluing layers

Last moment - all seat is covered by sintepone to make seat smooth before put covers in (poor pic, at other side it covered too)

So we get:
- frame
- felt
- 40 mm porolon
- sintepon
- ????
- PROFIT!

Covers made by seamstress. I'll make pics tomorrow. Paid for work and materials approx. 200$. That's nice price imo. Actually seats is done, but still need to finish front seats back.

Easy as 2+2. Now take your lazy ass off the computer and go to make some sweet bucket seats for your car. laugh.gif

Posted by: uiui Feb 24 2014, 06:39 PM

I want that car but it's expensive sad.gif anyway nice job man I like it!Votka will give you strenght for work laugh.gif

Posted by: Myca Mar 7 2014, 07:14 PM

Thanks dude. But actually it one of the cheapest classic to built. Except Moskvitches and Ladas.

Bought 1968 spare parts catalogue for 14$, A4 format. It's for 3rd series model, but also usable for 2nd.

27$ for taillights. Chrome is poor. Light glasses will be polished soon.

Rear emblem, nicknamed "Bird", also for 27$ (1000 rub). Pretty nice condition.

Side mirror, Got for 10$. It's from Moskvitch, but fits Volga too.

Interior watches. Found in storage.

Posted by: Myca Mar 23 2014, 01:19 PM

Got two new chrome hubs for brother's Lada 2101

Antenna for my Volga

Seems like it's new

Stop light glass from Gaz M-20 Pobeda

It's placed at trunk

And "air-conditioner". Pretty rare stuff.

Production date: december 1969

Values:
Chrome hubcaps - 28$ each = 56$
Antenna - 70$-140$
Stop light glass - 10$
Air fan - 25$-50$

Bought all this stuff for 28$. Besides it seller gave me 2 lens headlights for classic cars and pair of yellow foglights. That was a nice deal.

Posted by: uiui Mar 23 2014, 01:43 PM

It's always nice to see project update toothygrin.gif and you are actually Musa laugh.gif

Posted by: Myca Apr 14 2014, 06:19 AM

Yesterday was the engine day. It's already cleaned btw.

Family garage. Octavia is awesome car.

After removing manifolds

Manifolds

Splitted

Head cover

Looks like tar/goudron. that what happens if you use russian oil

Filled kerosene, to find leaks through valves

Engine rebuild starts. To be continued.

Cool project you have there.
Te engines of such old cars are scary toothygrin.gif

Posted by: Myca May 1 2014, 05:14 PM

Interior color scheme

Workspace.

Worked on bottom yesterday, there was no time to pics.
Today was cylinder head day. How it looks before:

Valves:

After some work:

Cylinder head is done. This 2brl carb I want to install instead of 1brl old one. K-126, made in USSR. With some mods I hope to get at least 85 bhp. Sounds like a joke, isn't it?

Posted by: Kubason May 1 2014, 07:57 PM

really nice project dood

Posted by: big trick daddy andy May 1 2014, 11:10 PM

holy f**k thats a lot of carbon

Posted by: Myca May 29 2014, 05:14 PM

Increased compression ratio from 6.73 to 8.4 by cylinder head milling. Now it runs on 92/95 octane instead of 76. Also gains 20 hp, 75->95.

Meanwhile I bought workshop or garage, dunno how to explain what is it, because I living at flat and I need space to stare my car and tools. Garage situated at suburb, every day me and my brother spent our time there.

There is huge mess in garage. Roof and floor is completely damaged. Hope to finish reconstruction next month.

How it looks now:

How it feels:

Lot of bugs and spiders. This is how this place looks, there is many other garages situated here. I tried to find US/european examples of such buildings, but I didnt found.

Coming to home at night. Day after day.

Posted by: N.Ozols May 29 2014, 06:10 PM

yeah, garages like that are a soviet thing. good luck with cleaning it out!

also, thats some neeeaaat HP increase, cool stuff, cool stuff!

edit

2007 baby

Posted by: Kevin May 30 2014, 06:02 PM

We don't have those here in the US
only certain states have those but its not a big thing
but a lot of people rent RV size storage garages and work on cars in those
that's what I plan to do soon lol

Posted by: Myca Jul 27 2014, 10:56 AM

Back to my car. 2 weeaks ago, i asked one redneck to weld chassis, cuz have no skill to do it myself. But maybe i'll remake some places in future.

Rolled chassis. Looks safe, isn't it?

There is no much rust, nice condition for car that runned over 50 years on salt roads without any repair.

And something is already fixed. Not high quality work. Stiil in progress

Just look at lead! Body metal thickness is 1.5 mm. Lead is like 3 or 5 mm at some places. Factory armored lmao

I hope finish bodywork next month. Ignore background. Garage isn't finished yet.

Posted by: Myca Aug 28 2014, 09:43 AM

Welding almsot done

gasser style yo

Hope it will be lower after assembling

Posted by: Ryuu Aug 28 2014, 11:27 AM

Still waiting for the warm weather

Now busy with bros Lada

Posted by: Myca Mar 24 2015, 01:52 PM

As I said I bought garage last year, but forgot to show you reconstruction process.

How it looks at first.

Tons of garbage and useless stuff, damaged roof. Wooden floor which provides high humidity in garage. We decided to make new roof and concrete floor. First step - garage cleaning.

Now we have space to store at least tools and materials.

End of part 1 (of 3)

Posted by: Myca Mar 24 2015, 02:04 PM

Next step is slate roof removal.

Lifted front wall by few bricks, then bought some wood and primary bars was made.

Secondary bars

New roof cover

btw that dude in black pants with racing stripes is me

End of part 2

Posted by: Myca Mar 24 2015, 02:18 PM

Roof is done! After it, we removed the rest of old roof from inside (it allowed us to work on new roof).

Tar paper

Now it's floor turn. At first reinforcement grid was made

Annnnnd it's done! (really was busy making floor, had no time to make pics)

Budget. 1 usd = 30 rubles (year before, now its 60 ;_; )

Garage - 60 000 rub = 2 000 usd
Wood - 7 000 rub = 250 usd
Slate - 3 000 rub = 100 usd
Reinforcement grid - 1 500 rub = 50 usd
Concrete - 4 500 rub = 150 usd
Work - zerocredits = free
Extras - approx 5 000 rub = 160 usd

Total: 81 000 rub or 2710 americano dollars

the end.

sorry for pics quality, filmed on hammer by potato

Posted by: Vicent M. Mar 24 2015, 11:12 PM

whoah thats amazing man

now you can work pretyt good

Posted by: Kevin Mar 25 2015, 04:23 AM

Thanks guys,

will work for food laugh.gif

Posted by: TribalThunder Mar 25 2015, 07:42 AM

That's indeed one badass improvement.

Posted by: Myca Mar 26 2015, 01:13 PM

Next work was made last year.

This is bottom edge of the left fender

As you can see it's rusted a liitle bit.

Cleaned up with grinder:

Cutt off

Replacement part

Aaaaaaaaand it's done!

At first i thought it's impossible to repair this fender. That was my first welding and fabrication experience.

Conclusions:
1. Next time use 1.00 mm sheet metal or less (I had only 1.2 mm)
2. Never make direct impacts, put some absorbing material (like wood or rubber) between tool and metal.
3. Too poor to afford english wheel.

Total:
Work - zero credits = 0 usd.

And sorry for garbage on the background - thats not my yard.
Pics was filmed by welding machine.

Posted by: Kevin Mar 26 2015, 02:42 PM

the amount of rust on this car you've fixed makes the rust on my car look like a joke wacko.gif

looks pretty good for a first try, dont worry if you dont see your welding improve, it takes some time. (for me it does atleast lol)

I learned by welding random s**t together at my job lol..

Workshop looks nice myca! It looks like alot of work..
