Last time we had a lot of spam bots we did that they went away for awhile

Isn't the captcha thing already in place? If closing the registration for a week or so helps, then I'm for it.
A captcha is already in place, Mike has recently attached a cloud flare account to the site, which should significantly reduce the amount of bots on the site. The sudden influx of spam in the last hour or so was down to one or two bots. The few that get by are much more advanced by the looks of things and we're constantly trying to improve our systems to get around it. We'll be keeping registrations open for the time being as the amount of new members that have become a great part of the community is a welcome turn of events.
