My toy. 1962 Gaz M21 Volga. Was bought few weeks for 1000 Euro, pretty nice condition. Engine works, but oil change wasn't done for 5 last years, so i dont want to start it. Now it waits for registartion and garage. Engine - 2.5 L petrol, 3 speed manual gearbox, approx weight - 1580 kg. 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) - approx 30 sec, max speed 130 km/h.
Comparable american car - 1952 Ford Mainline And yes, it have more rust than Duncan's bus (IMG:http://s020.radikal.ru/i718/1306/73/2e9e8f75882c.jpg) (IMG:http://s017.radikal.ru/i431/1306/72/4473f83f2920.jpg) (IMG:http://s018.radikal.ru/i525/1306/75/be7a7b9ddaea.jpg) (IMG:http://i031.radikal.ru/1306/dd/d2590149c220.jpg) |

@N.OzolS, thanks dude, as you said, it's difficult to find 2 gen even here, in Russia. 1962 (first half) was last year of 2 gen production, chassis №19xxxx
thanks, at first i was thinking about 4.5L v8 engine swap but decided to keep it original, but make it bit lower with some classic accessories. |

keep outside as it is, then some chrome wheels on it, lower it till you can barely put your thumb between the ground and the car, and then a full sick interior. Basically, turn it into a ratrod.

Time to show what i'm doing instead of pixel cars
First day at car, removing front body panels: fenders and grill (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/261020131557_zpsc4289183.jpg) One does not simply to remove 50 years old rusted bolts and nuts, so had to cut them off with grinder (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/261020131562_zps45f6b519.jpg) At the end of first day. Gasser-look (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/261020131567_zps79ac03cd.jpg) Second day starts (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130216_zps653260e1.jpg) Workspace (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130301_zpseff12eb8.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130296_zps852b3821.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130319_zpsb76115fb.jpg) That was a nice weekend. Next step is front suspension rebuild. |

Another weekend spent at car. Today focus was at front suspension
(IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130331_zpsd30f0519.jpg) Very bad condition, backslashes?? (dunno how at english) everywhere, suspension plays like drunk russian (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130334_zpsfe5a84ea.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130356_zps14029685.jpg) Front brakes, not self-adjustable, decided to replace brake cylinders to Gaz-24 one's (self-adjustable). Still be worst car brakes ever made. (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130378_zps6306dffd.jpg) First layer of primer was made at evening (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130401_zpsa4ca0d5e.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130403_zps06dd4612.jpg) Tomorrow front suspension will be fully painted. Ordered some bushings, hope finish front suspension built next weekend. @Kuba Calculated total cost of restoration. I expect it around 5000$ or a bit more, of course if i do most of work myself, except paintjob, but who knows, i could try it too. Total (3/11/13) Money spent: 560$ Work spent: 79 man-hours |

so are you V8 swapping it? And how are you going to repair the rust, like are you getting authentic replacement segments or are you sheet metal rewelding? |

Authentic replacement segments is too expensive for me, and there is one problem - they dont fit because of low quality soviet press forming and each car was individual lol. There is not much part that can be replaced without customization.
V8 will be on another car (3rd series), which i hope to get at this sunday. My 2nd series "Shark" is rare (not much as first "Star") than 3rd series "Whalebone", thats why i dont want to make any mods on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAZ-21 |

Was too cold to work on the body, so i decided spent free time to the interior.
My first interior expirience. Firstly, seats was stripped off (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130706_zps50f47aa6.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130707_zps724f0eb3.jpg) Then painted (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130715_zps49f4820a.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1130714_zps5e06d9d7.jpg) Here you can see rear seat layout (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/P1130720_zps21919d68.jpg) Seat frames covered by felt/numdah (dunno how is more correct) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/P1130723_zps391712d1.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/P1130724_zps22fd98ff.jpg) Next step is gluing layers (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/P1130725_zps63d18707.jpg) Last moment - all seat is covered by sintepone to make seat smooth before put covers in (poor pic, at other side it covered too) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/P1130740_zps45151ebc.jpg) So we get: - frame - felt - 40 mm porolon - sintepon - ???? - PROFIT! Covers made by seamstress. I'll make pics tomorrow. Paid for work and materials approx. 200$. That's nice price imo. Actually seats is done, but still need to finish front seats back. Easy as 2+2. Now take your lazy ass off the computer and go to make some sweet bucket seats for your car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) This post has been edited by Myca: Feb 24 2014, 05:33 PM |

(IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1140649_zps0ae211d2.jpg) Worked on bottom yesterday, there was no time to pics. Today was cylinder head day. How it looks before: (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1140656_zpsf84b1a6f.jpg) Valves: (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1140666_zps363974f4.jpg) After some work: (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1140657_zps0011dc2a.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Gaz%2021/P1140671_zps848ff416.jpg) Cylinder head is done. This 2brl carb I want to install instead of 1brl old one. K-126, made in USSR. With some mods I hope to get at least 85 bhp. Sounds like a joke, isn't it? Increased compression ratio from 6.73 to 8.4 by cylinder head milling. Now it runs on 92/95 octane instead of 76. Also gains 20 hp, 75->95.
(IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/180520141664_zps3dfc0cda.jpg) Meanwhile I bought workshop or garage, dunno how to explain what is it, because I living at flat and I need space to stare my car and tools. Garage situated at suburb, every day me and my brother spent our time there. (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/280520141672_zps505482dc.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/280520141675_zps0e3d2eff.jpg) There is huge mess in garage. Roof and floor is completely damaged. Hope to finish reconstruction next month. (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/280520141677_zps1a1a3b82.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/280520141680_zps69e28be4.jpg) How it looks now: (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/280520141679_zpsd97cb807.jpg) How it feels: (IMG:http://i.imgur.com/bLq0G.jpg) Lot of bugs and spiders. This is how this place looks, there is many other garages situated here. I tried to find US/european examples of such buildings, but I didnt found. (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/280520141681_zpse76bc587.jpg) Coming to home at night. Day after day. We don't have those here in the US

As I said I bought garage last year, but forgot to show you reconstruction process.
How it looks at first. (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140841_zpsheyw6zob.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140842_zpspvp2ltec.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140843_zpsv5d97xyv.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140844_zps6ubu7apt.jpg) Tons of garbage and useless stuff, damaged roof. Wooden floor which provides high humidity in garage. We decided to make new roof and concrete floor. First step - garage cleaning. (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140854_zpsg27gm7ut.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140855_zpsudqkpxrf.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140858_zpsdf2udkcn.jpg) Now we have space to store at least tools and materials. End of part 1 (of 3) |

Roof is done! After it, we removed the rest of old roof from inside (it allowed us to work on new roof).
(IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140887_zps2ilbmcj2.jpg) Tar paper (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1140891_zpsevvlmowy.jpg) Now it's floor turn. At first reinforcement grid was made (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/220620141711_zpsfpjheoya.jpg) Annnnnd it's done! (really was busy making floor, had no time to make pics) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1150087_zpsw2qtebwf.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1150087_zpsw2qtebwf.jpg) (IMG:http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r573/MycaSG/Garage/P1150090_zpsiqbc7au5.jpg) Budget. 1 usd = 30 rubles (year before, now its 60 ;_; ) Garage - 60 000 rub = 2 000 usd Wood - 7 000 rub = 250 usd Slate - 3 000 rub = 100 usd Reinforcement grid - 1 500 rub = 50 usd Concrete - 4 500 rub = 150 usd Work - zerocredits = free Extras - approx 5 000 rub = 160 usd Total: 81 000 rub or 2710 americano dollars the end. sorry for pics quality, filmed on hammer by potato This post has been edited by Myca: Mar 24 2015, 02:23 PM |

Next work was made last year.
This is bottom edge of the left fender (IMG:https://e-a.d-cd.net/7d502c2s-960.jpg) (IMG:https://f-a.d-cd.net/e3502c2s-960.jpg) As you can see it's rusted a liitle bit. Cleaned up with grinder: (IMG:https://g-a.d-cd.net/cb502c2s-960.jpg) (IMG:https://e-a.d-cd.net/5b502c2s-960.jpg) Cutt off (IMG:https://f-a.d-cd.net/97502c2s-960.jpg) Replacement part (IMG:https://b-a.d-cd.net/68f02c2s-480.jpg) (IMG:https://h-a.d-cd.net/c0d02c2s-960.jpg) (IMG:https://a-a.d-cd.net/8cf02c2s-480.jpg) (IMG:https://e-a.d-cd.net/91082c2s-960.jpg) Aaaaaaaaand it's done! (IMG:https://d-a.d-cd.net/34d02c2s-960.jpg) (IMG:https://d-a.d-cd.net/6cd02c2s-960.jpg) At first i thought it's impossible to repair this fender. That was my first welding and fabrication experience. Conclusions: 1. Next time use 1.00 mm sheet metal or less (I had only 1.2 mm) 2. Never make direct impacts, put some absorbing material (like wood or rubber) between tool and metal. 3. Too poor to afford english wheel. Total: Work - zero credits = 0 usd. And sorry for garbage on the background - thats not my yard. Pics was filmed by welding machine. |
