So typically I go and spam the 'what car are you obsessing about' thread whenever I have an update on my car search, so I figured I should just get make my own thread. Hopefully it will get more interesting in the coming months.
Anyway, I've been steadily stashing away hunnids to put towards a car, and I'm up to about $7,500. Ideally I'd like to spend around $5,000 max on the actual car, and the rest on goodies.
At first, I planned on buying a cheap FD and fixing it up, but there was really nothing it my price range that ran and had a clean title. In fact there was nothing close. So I gave up.
Definitely for the best, because I know I wouldn't enjoy owning an FD beat up enough to be worth $5k.
Currently I'm thinking AE86 hatch or 240sx hatch. I'm willing to go anywhere in the country to find something clean and rust free, since the east coast + vintage jap steel generally doesn't end well.
Right now I'm leaning towards the 240, only because a very thorough search for an 86 didn't turn up anything reasonable. It's hard to find a clean rust free hatch, period, but to find one reasonably priced is a whole different animal. Basically, it would take everything I have saved (and that's if I manage to find one).
The closest I got was with an SR5 that is fairly clean (clean enough for me to buy and be happy with) but the price is just way too much for an SR5. For my entire $7500 I wouldn't even be able to finish the GTS conversion, let alone start actually adding any personal touches.
I'm about to email http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/3953189271.html, and try to find out if the car is a clean as I think. Then I'll update the thread. The price seems decent, a flight to Dallas is only $120, and the drive back is 26 hrs. Do-able in a weekend.
So, that's the saga so far. Hopefully it won't be too long before I can start documenting a build. And not just searching endlessly.
Yis yis sounds good
Thats like, 11000 here i think
>auto
bro you need a manuél
excuse-moi I didn't read the other topic
Good luck broski
Manual not manuel he don't need a guy
Posted a WTB thread on Club4AG a little while back and heard back from someone today. The guy has a fully converted SR5 hatch with a decent amount of goodies (coils, etc). He is asking around $6k. I am waiting on pics and some more information to see if it is worth what he is asking.
Kinda on the fence between 86 and 240, I love both. The 240 in Type-X spec and the 86 in old school Running Free/Goodline spec are just gorgeous. I just don't know if i can justify $5-$6k for a far from perfect 86 when I could find a near perfect 240 for $2-$3k.
Edit: @Daniel sounds like you already figured this out, but I decided I don't care about the auto because I want to swap the engine out anyway, and I'd get a 5spd with the engine.
I think an 86 has more of a classy factor than the 240
I see way too many s-series even in canada owned by yoloswag teens
I think if your planing to build a simple clean car done right, the AE will get more appreciation
I'm not even into these cars/tuning styles but I'd much rather see an 86. If anything tho test drive several and see what you really truly want
Well if i were in your position i'd get a 240 because it's newer and i like how the type x looks, and even though it's newer and more powerful, it's not more expensive
Also i think buying a stock car and modifying it yourself is cooler than buying someone else's project car.
Personally, I would choose the 240. It's a hard choice, yet you don't see 240's in good, clean shape. Most have been f**ked over and whored out. This should, in turn, make a clean, almost completely stock 240 that much more unique.
I've always had a soft spot for an 86. Although I don't see too many of them getting riced out like 240's. Yet, the 86 is older than the S13. So you would seem to think that 86's would be more valuable against an S13.
I look for reliability when browsing through car sales. I like to preserve things.
But that's just my opinion.
You choose what you think is best for you.
the 240 is a good find, not very molested and the only problem is the auto box. I found a clean S13 'vert a while back with an automatic too. If that falls through, try to focus more on an AE86. They're cheaper, less often molested & drifted, and have a hell of a nice interior without those stupid automatic seat belts. Plus the engine sounds nicer.
Wow thanks for the replies guys. It seems as if all of us are kind of on the same page.
Faran, I know what you mean about the classy factor. I think the 86 is getting to that age where it stops looking dated and starts looking vintage (I mean to non-car people, anyway.) The 240 looks a lot more modern but not new. The interior especially looks really dated.
Nick I totatally agree about buying a stock car rather than a project. I like the idea of getting the car the same way it came from the factory and doing all the work myself to make sure it's done right. I mean, even an aftermarket radio can turn out ot be a nightmare if the PO didn't do a good job.
Swift I like you thinking. Most AE86's are either in s**tty condition with peeling paint and sagging USDM bumpers, or clean panda paint with JDM bumpers and the owners choice of 15" rim. Most 240's seem to either be stock and beat to s**t, or modified and beat to s**t.
Nismo the auto bothered me more at first but a lot less now. I'll get a new tranny with whatever swap I choose, and there are just a few more parts to buy to fully convert the car to manual. The hard part will be dealing with the auto until I have the time to start the swap.
Take a look at these two build threads from http://zilvia.net/f/builds-builds-only/238647-93-sr-hatch-build-mitten-state.html and http://zilvia.net/f/chat/408198-red-180sx-build-thread.html on Zilvia. These two builds are my inspiration. Both very clean, simple builds, focused on quality. That's what I want to strive for, regardless if I'm building an 86 or 240.
KING OF DOPE
Staggered TE's are so f**king dope. I wouldn't change a damn thing.
what if you do a 180 like a 86
insta-win
I'm glad you're going to shell out the extra $$ for a car instead of buying a piece of s**t then attempting to make it rad. Like all the dumbd**k 240 kids down here. (And me, I was an idiot.)
I mean yeah it's cool to build something and thrash it or whatever, but there's a fine line between having an actual nice presentable daily/drifter and a piece of s**t lol. When I'm able to I'm def. shelling out the extra money for an FC in f**kING GOOD condition. Maybe not showroom on the outside, cause I could give a f**k, bodywork is hella easy and I like it, but like rotary-nerd-owned knows-every-inch-of-the-13b $4000 condition.
And either car you decide on you'll get a cool ride. I really would like an ae86 coupe but f**k dude, I wouldn't be able to handle the slow personally lol. Not like 240's are fast... haha
yea the 86 has always been tops in my book
Its just a drivers car.
doesn't need to be whored out with mods to be fun
can take a bit of a beating but goes back together easy
a lot of professionals talk about how easy it is to drive
and they make great DD/Track day cars.
Don't get me wrong, the s13/14s are great tuning cars cause they are also easy
but they have trouble living up to their social hypes
The 86 fits perfectly, as a light weight car that can carve corners better than most domestics
My guy bonked on me so im gonna hunt, think i'll save until January or Feb to start looking again...
I may have found the holy grail. One owner red 240sx SE Fastback, garaged all its life, 36k miles. 100% stock. VERY fairly priced. Sent the seller an email, if I don't hear back by tomorrow I'm just going to call them. Only flaw is the auto tranny, but I'll swap it. It's not like I'm going to find another one with a 5spd in this condition.
I was also contacted by a guy selling the demo car for his ae86 restoration shop. It's an SR5 hatch but should be properly clean.
We'll see what happens If everything goes perfectly I'll be on a plane Friday going to pick up the 240, but that is assuming the car hasn't been sold already.
Btw, my plan for the 240 is pretty simple. Phase one would be to replace all wear parts, bushing, hoses, etc, JDM half and half indicators, and after that just fix what needs fixing. After that is done, I'd look into swapping the tranny.
My dream would be to get coils and wats for it too, but that would kill the budget for phase two, which would be to start collecting parts for the 'real' build.
Car shopping is a massive pain in the ass. GOOD luck with your end overs sir cant wait to see pics of the new ride
dude sorry to hear...
I lost several 86 deals too. Now im gonna have to wait till january for school to let out so I can get mine haha
So update time. I've sent loads of emails to various S13 sellers and have nothing to show for it. I'm starting to think I'm just not fit to own a 240sx since I actually care about little details and the general condition of the car. Whenever I start asking specific questions the sellers either dodge them or just don't respond... pretty stupid on their part since unlike 95% of the people in the market for 240sx's, I actually have the money to spend. There have been several cars I'd have paid asking price for if I just got decent pics and information...
...anyway... kinda over the 240. Looking into getting either a Mk4 Supra of FD RX7 now. Obviously whatever I find will be stretching my budget, but at this point I'm in no hurry. If I'm going to spend many months on Craigslist I'd rather it be for a legend like the Supra or a timeless beauty like the RX7.
Next update will be with an actual car... hopefully sooner rather than later.
The supra and rx7 sounds great, can be great cars. Good luck with searching ..
Thanks Richard Hopefully I'll be spending more time in the team section soon, I haven't had anytime to spare for pixeling being back at school.
I'm attracted to the Supra mostly because it's built like an absolute tank. Kind of the polar opposite of the RX7 in terms or reliability. I wish the Supra was smaller and lighter though. The petite-ness of the RX7 is one of my favorite parts I love the idea of a small, nimble car. Obviously, the Supra doesn't exactly fit that description, but I like for a different reason.
I replied to a half dozen or so Supra ads, most were pretty sketchy, but I don't really care since I'd pay with cash, in person, after seeing the car for myself. If someone wants to sell their Supra for less than it's worth on a unknown classifieds site, more power to them. There is only one way to figure out who's legitimate and who's not.
Also found a really nice RX7 on Craigs from a dealer. I'm not a fan of dealers, but this one foolishly put "All prices below KBB" on their page... KBB values even excellent RX7's below $10k... wayyyyy below actual market value (truly excellent ones are closer to $18k). So I'll definitely be looking into buying it if the dealer is serious about their "All prices below KBB" credo.
The cheap rx7 is definitely worth looking, but there might be a reason why he sells for cheap. I never believe the quote "I'm done with this car" haha. I had a time when I was also searching for a supra, but most were pre-tuned with a higher price
buy a molested FC and swap an ls7
Ahh, scams. Pain in the ass A while back when I was looking I found a very good looking and very fairly priced S14, and, well, yep, scam.
also shut the hell up andy, even original 13B unmolested FC's are decently cheap as it is
Well guys. It finally happened. I gave up BOUGHT A F***ING CAR.
Not gonna say what it is until i get my own pics (making the trek to pic it up this weekend), but I will say it is NOT an RX-7. It is also VERY far from stock.
What convinced me to forget about the RX-7 and buy it was A.) The RX-7 search was going horrible and B.) this thing was in great shape with an amazing parts list. It needs a little love to be great but I will get it there.
Stay tuned.
So f**king pumped man, cant wait to see more pics of it hit me up on facebook asap
What is it, what is it?!
I hope it's Supra
An old supra with some engine mods? Haha, good to hear you finally found something, can't wait for dem pics.
He didnt say it wasnt an 86
it might be an 86
does it have an ls engine
it better have an ls engine
ls engine
ls
He send me that picture o_O
He bought a biplane.
he bought a bicycle
Goddamn you guys are getting close
take some photos already damnit
I would if it was here.
It's still 12 hours away. I am going to pick it up on the 19th. I can't wait.
oh, nice
Just had a nice convo with the current owner. He seems like a real straight shooter and genuine nice guy. Also his name is Chris like me lol. Plan to pick it up Saturday still stands, even got a buddy to sign on for the roadtrip.
And just cause I love you guys, here is a pic:
Super straight, rust free. But the best part is what I am not showing you. you guys will have to wait for that.
EDIT: someone get madset a cookie
Lucky, that is so cool! What engine does it have? I'm guessing that it's a swap.
13b
it better has a 13b
how much?
it looks clean, does it come with a full set of matching wheels?
and you must forgive me if I laugh if it has a 3T or 4AC/F engine or something
Thanks guys.
We agreed to $7k. But that price is a result of the parts. (Trick suspension [PBM coils] +more) and something special under the hood. NOT a 4ac lol)
It has a full set of steelies in fairly weak sizes. 15x8 -38 or something. Also has a pair of 15x9 grids. I'll prob get like a $50 set of wheels and tires on craigs and sell all the wheels. (Ok ill probably roast at least 1 set of tires first). Then get rota RKR's in 15x9 -10/0 or 15x10s for the rear if they come out soon.
Front and rear fenders are +35 right now, but i want new +20 fenders in the front. Either way im gonna have plenty of room.
BIG plans for this little guy
Altezza beams engine?
Yay i guessed correct
this my mates dream car, he literally never shuts up about when he gets his 86 trueno
Wow great find Oggy! Looks really good.
<3333333333333
SWAP IT LS
Oh
oh no rotas!!!!!!!!~! good buy mane
googled RKR, got pic of real watanabes lol
Thanks dudes.
Rotas are happening. I don't have $3k to drop on Type-R wats in the custom sizes I want. They are definitely on the list for the future, but I'd actually like to get some other things done before throwing the budget out the window.
Don't worry, I don't plan on making cheap parts a habit for this thing.
gad dammit this is a cool find
Hey if its got a 4agze under the hood from a 101 make sure the swap is done properly...
but congrats but I hope to get my ae86 soon...
Hurray for the AE86!
Much love man!
Oh for sure. BTW, does PBM make coilover kits for this car? Or is it running S13 s**t? As far as i can remember hardly any companies make rear coils for Corollas.
1UZ? :U
nice buy!
meh rotas, some wide 14" steelies would look cool.
the stance you want, it's something like http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vtxOs-tEdaA/T104YwFS_MI/AAAAAAAAB38/E4t4YEzV0TQ/s1600/noriyaro_majorforce_ae86_L_01.jpg?
and the engine, hmm, i hope it's a 4agze.
wait, you pulled the rwd corolla on a front dolly and used a crossover to pull it?
risky but if it worked... no harm no foul. surprised you didn't get stuck.
engine and interior pics
Dat AE86! I just can't stop loving them.
I'll be getting one soon so expect twin touge hill dorifto
itbs and a buddyclub exhaust
pls dont tell me its an f20c my friend will go nuts
Nawwwww 20V Blacktop. The F20 is great but the 86 needs a 4age just like an Rx7 needs a rotary.
(Although I will conceed that the F20 in an 86 makes a lot more sense to me than a V8 in an RX.)
good boy lol
velocity stacks are trumpets arent they?
Packing a 20v with ITBs? hell yes the only thing better would be a factory trd tuned 4agze. I'm glad you think the 4A belongs in the 86. It such a great little motor.
and glad to here about the tranny haha I was just curious. I had to haul an oldsmobile 442 the same way and the thing was so heavy it made our truck slide.
congrats again. I am insanely jealous and hope to join you very soon with my own little 86 dream car
INDIVIDUEL THROTLLE BODIES
I prayed for him to get this when he first showed me the craiglisting
do i get biblebash points?
yep!
SCORE
Me and Oggy had a huge chat about this car, so glad you got it buddy <3 literally worked out well for you haha hunted hard and hit gold
Build thread pls
Want me to rename topic title for you now that you have the car?
shoulda just bought an engineless shell and waited like 3 years to spend any money on it
lol but really thats sick as hell. nice find. where's it from? im guessing like right along the east coast?
Yay now we can constantly yell at you to lower it!
No but really when you mess with the height you should take a collar off your pbm's all around and see how it sits, lel
Sorry to hear about all the school work, it's worth it in the long run!
dont even cut the springs, thats so damn dangerous lol
just lower the f**k out of it
oni camber dat s**t
boso pipe and so on
taking a collar off isnt cutting the springs, just making already low coilovers lower
Ah, i thought you meant cutting a coil off
nah f**k that pbm's are spensive
and beautiful
No pictures because I was too lazy to take them while working and it rained today (and I didn't want to take off the car cover BUT I spent my first day working on the car.
It is in really good shape. Very very little rust. Nothing structural, just a bit of surface rust. I am pumped. It does need body work tho. Its got some dings here and there, nothing major, but the drivers floor plan has some dents that I will want taken out for sure. Rear quarter needs the most work. It has an origin replica wide body riveted on one side, but it fit so terribly the PO removed it and plug welded all the holes. He did a good job for the most part, but it definitely needs more work to meet my standards.
Anyways, yesterday I got all of the interior pieces I was given re installed. So all the lower dash trim (glovebox, etc) and also reinstalled the front carpet (all I have). In total I probably added 10 or 15 pounds at the absolute most, but worth it in my eyes because it looks like a car again and I won't be embarrassed to have it inspected or have a girl who doesn't 'understand' ride in it.
Short term plan currently is: Get more Grid V's for the rear to complete the set, and new tires for the rear. Complete the interior. Replace what is left in the interior with black parts in good shape.
Long term plan is: strip it 100% and send it to a shop that knows their stuff to make sure the chassis is straight and to spec, and to fix all the dings and dents, and prepare for paint. Can't decide if I want it to be white with black bumpers, or all red. I have been leaning towards all red. Run Free rear fenders (the car currently has Run Free reps) I want to make sure they are installed perfect too. Goodline front bumper, kouki rear, MAYBE oem side skirts. Whiteline tails (I think redlines look bad on red cars). Kouki lights in front. Muscle Bear +25 front fenders (The look like rolled and pulled stock fenders). Goodline hood. Ganador mirrors, TRD hatch lip. Replace the transmission (I have a spare), and the big thing, rewire the car. I want to run a really nice tucked engine harness, with a milspec connector through the firewall. Also move the battery to the rear and the fuse box behind the firewall. Also go for COP conversion with a standalone ECU. I want to add in some other luxuries that were removed previously (not the AC or heater though, all that stuff is too heavy). Really nice high rise header I want ceramic coated white. AN fittings throughout. Eventually I'd want to open up the engine and make sure it is perfect. Maybe go for a more aggressive cam and a thinner head gasket a little performance boost. I would like to make about 200hp when all is said and done.
+1 for wanting interior
That is a huge point for me, having full interior. I could give a f**k about weight. Ripping interior on damn near stock cars is so f**king ricer lol.
It's cool you don't have to worry about engine s**t, just work on the body and paint it when you can.
Oh and for the love of god please don't do panda
it's so ugly and overrated, black bumers looks cool, but i have seen sooooo many damn black & white 86's it just bugs me now lol.
this is where it's at:
or any other color besides white on black:
look how bad this is:
Plasti dip the car for now
yes, a proper restoration. I'm envious!
I really wanna do a full bride gradient interior when I get mine. back seats and all. replace the trim and what not
you're getting all of my respect
I like the full glove box cover but the floor mats look sorta half assed in that pic
This will be so sweet when you get it all put together
"yeah bro as you can see I REALLY like bride"
So jelly...
Going back home for Thanksgiving and I plan to have the car driveable, registered, and inspected during that time. I know I need a drivers seat (PO had a beautiful carbon bride he didn't want to let go) and new rear tires... Also a horn button because you need a horn to pass inspection.
I found a legit Bride Vios III sparkleback for under $400. The seat looks to be in solid condition and comes with a Civic rail. The only problem is that it appears to have the seat cover from a Zeta III (lol?) If I can get some idea of the cost for a new seat cover I'd definitely buy it.
ONE SEAT
FOR $400
lel
the back looks sexy though
I just read that you bought it from East TN.
I'm from Mid TN dude haha
or just find a wrecked type r civic/integra and rip the seats out
Dude a new Vios III runs $900 in the US. The problem with those old recaros and the Type R ones is mounting. I already have a buddy club rail for a bucket with side mounts so that why I'm looking at full buckets.
EDIT: And Kevin that is pretty funny. I was around Johnson City. I really like it down there.
ah makes sence haha
oh hey this is really super cool. sprinters are crazy expensive over here (for what they are), rare to find one under 10k
pics!
Congrats mate! Nice hachiroku you bought, seems perfect body|chassis condition. Should be interesting built, keep working man.
At this thread i feel myself like i'm at library, as Brandon said would be nice if you post some sweet pics of your ride.
we_came_here_to_see_pics,_not_to_read._Schwarzenneger_for_presedent.JPEG
lol
lemme see ya piiiiiiics
you wanna see my whaaat?
yep, ya pics, yep yep - ya piiiiics
Why you guys still posting in here? lol
I am away at school. Tomorrow I go back to my house, where my car is, for Thanksgiving break. Then you guys will finally have your precious pics.
we're pre-gaming dude!
Typical Thanksgiving at the Oggy house. Bride seat is in (as you can see). Driveshaft in. Underside is 100% rust free. Amazing. More pics later once I get it on the road.
goddamn I'm beyond jealous
for christmas you should fix it up and send it my way
You for got to take me with you
stripes remind me of 90's minitruck
good.
Looks sick man
so much jellyness here
I can't stay
nice to see some progress, nice car man
Doing werk:
WIP interior:
Engine bay:
Another night shot:
I ended up putting the stock fenders on because they fit much better, and I'm kinda anal about panel gaps and stuff. I did end up getting it back on the ground, and it even passed inspection. The thing is an absolute blast to drive.
I demand a driving vid
i like the pin striping.
>drift handbrake
oh yes
In terms of chassis bracing it looks like it's pretty solid with the quarter and three point bars
man I'm jealous haha
Paint it red like in your sig, but with white wheels
Woah. Pretty nice condition, imo it's ready to drive
Red, Yellow, and white are the common factory colors for the GT-Apexi
and in my opinion, they are the best colors for the 86
especially Red with black front and rear bumpers and door trim
I'm not a fan of the striping actually haha maybe if it was a different color
Oh and if you'd be up for it there's a guy in ATL selling a TRD wide body kit replica that looks pretty good http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/pts/4132203270.html
What rates are your PBM's?
8k front 6k rear. I gotta f**k with them though because they are really hard. Too hard really. The car isn't that low, I haven't scraped it and I've gone up some pretty sketchy entry ramps, so IMO there is no reason to have this hard of a suspension. I probably going to lower the preload and see how much softer that makes them, but I am looking into some swift springs for the future.
And btw, can I just take a moment to say f**k NRG. They blatantly rip off everything Works Bell does but they don't seem to get half the bad rap that other clone companies like Rota get.
Anyway can we all just take a moment to appreciate this work of art:
I'm a sucker for beautiful machining like that. I really want one of those. I think the silver one combined with a silver Nardi classic would look incredible.
oggy what is that?
Steering wheel spacer/hub
Yeah it flips up you wheel so you can get out:
It's supposed to be inspired by JGTC cars. I just love the quality of it.
And Faran is right, if I were going to put a TRD kit on, it would need to be legit and it would need to be cheap, because honestly I really like the stock body. Eventually I think I will go back to metal fenders in the rear.
Dont f**k with the preload. What dampening level are they set to? I know PBM's are stiff as f**k but you could adjust the knob at the top more towards the soft side. Not too much though, it'll get bouncy as f**k if you have it at full soft with big tires.
And there's replica running free kits out there, dont need anything else
They are set pretty soft ATM, but that doesn't really make that much of a difference in ride quality. Preload can be adjusted without f**king everything up. 8k and 6k springs aren't that stiff as far as spring rates go, so I'm assuming they are decently preloaded as is. I'd like to go with so taller swift spings and assist springs to get more travel and make the car a bit more manageable on the road. It would be fine for the track, but if you hit a bump with in a corner or while accelerating hard (which is inevitable around here) you kinda get tossed around.
EDIT: As for the kit, needs to be Goodline hood & bumper (Muscle Bear has taken over production fro Goodline now). TRD hatch lip and Kouki rear bumper (already have that). OEM sideskirts or nothing at all, haven't decided. Either keep the metal front fenders and really work the flares or go with Muscle Bear FRP front fenders that look like aggressively rolled stock ones. And mirrors will be EC works. Probably the hardest piece to find out of everything.
first time I've seen that style hub/spacer haha
yeah 8/6 os plenty stiff for your car. s**ts light.
if you gonna get swifts thought might as well just get the short ass one so you have good ridew but ca be on the floor
my fc was super harsh too, very stiff. pbms are known to be real harsh. pbms are quality as f**k though. you can even get the pro series springs and just swap em out so it gives a nicer ride with bad asss dampening
sorry i r cant type
actually i think pros come with swifts, but yeahssd
Yeah I know they are harsh. I don't expect it to ride like its on a cloud, just want it a little more New England pothole friendly. And I don't need shorter springs, the thing is already about as low as I want and I have like an inch of thread left on the damper, so I may as well fill that with a taller spring for some more travel. I don't really know for sure what I'll be doing until I go back home again though. At that point I will be taking out the coils and checking them over to see what kind of replacement springs i can fit
looks pretty sweet man, I like where its going
keep working!
Looking pretty sweet! Engine bay looks fairly clean.
I love those hubs.
I wouldn't go much lower than 6k on the spring rates. 8k/6k isn't very stiff at all. Mine are around 12k/10k, and I know mine is for a little different usage being that it's being built for track use primarily. But even then, I know people to run 14k/18k even. In fact, my red car was actually pretty close to 8k/6k and it was super comfortable. Harshness could also be that the dampers are either going bad or not valved correctly for your spring rates or even bushings could be a source of harshness. Just saying it may not be the springs that are at fault. But if you do end up going for new springs, I'd suggest some progressive rate ones.
Trade some bro for BC's, idk if they make them for corollas though. Those are def one of my faves, they ride real nice even with 12/10 and 14/10.
The PBMs are fine, I was just being a little bitch. I do like the BCs because they have spindles built in. Eventually I will get some like that.
I went to a huge meet tonight and it was sick. I did a lot of work in the bay tucking wires and s**t before hand. The car got a lot of attention, it was pretty cool. I may be biased but I honestly thought it could have been the best sounding car there. The open trumpets, the Spec 2 - the thing sounds f**king mental. I took it though a tunnel at like 7500 rpm with the windows down... It changed my life.
Here's a pic someone got of it on IG: http://instagram.com/p/ifBLUEHxIZ/
very rad
Ye looks heaps better with stock fenders.
Anyways if you're worried styling wise. Go for red with black rims. Just like in your sig. Works the best imo.
nice parking jackass. lel
+1 on fenders
Looks great my n***a
What's your IG?
Don't wanna make you cry or anything but my boy wrapped his 86 coupe around a tree a week or so ago... He hit a puddle and hydroplaned doing about 55
doin' about ninedaaay on the freeway smokin
It's a shame really...
with all your plans you will never be faster than my 86
depending of how low yu can be faster lol
I think he was referring to the fancy 4AGZE he's putting in. I hope anyway, since my alignment is now fine so the height isn't inhibiting anything other than getting over speed bumps. But I'll be modding the exhaust soon so I can go even lower.
The real shame is you will never get here quad throttle breathing through open stacks... just a supercharger wining away. I hear enough whining at home.
EDIT: How can you say no to this face??? I must buy her everything.
LOOLL you got me
what kind of exhaust are you gonna do? Over axle or under?
i need a rev vid of this pls thx k bai
SHE IS SUCH A BABE, MY GOD <3
Just scored a silver Nardi Classic for $30
Pretty heavily worn but idc. I love that wheel. Pics when it gets here.
topics like this always make me depressed because I'd love to work on my car like that but it's hard without money
:C
Have you heard of using a 7M alternator as a reliable replacement?
I heard it somewhere but was wondering if you knew about it
I know Denso makes OEM alternators now
Yeah I've heard of it. I was looking into a more powerful alternator a little while back. The problem is it is hard to find an alternator that puts out power at idle (800/850) and doesn't explode at redline (8000+). The 7M alt puts out more amps but came on a car with a lower redline than the 86. All that aside, it fits and it provides more amps. That's about the extent of my knowledge on them.
I won't have those issues lol Im just wondering if new brackets have to be made for it
95% sure it bolt right up.
In other news, I sold my rear bumper!!!!
'But Oggy, you had a super 1337 JDM bumper?!?!?!?!'
Yes children, have faith. Big things are coming.
Also got a job so if all goes according to plan I'm gonna have loads of parts rolling in a week or two.
hey if you could also roll some parts my way that'd be great
in need of some gunmetal te37vs and Reinhard exhaust
thanks again
put some anime pussy on the hood
i went to google search anime pussy but i spelt anime 'animal' and oh my god
never again
Toppest of the lels
Just spend $475 on a bunch on two big hunks of fiberglass... they'll be here in a week :3
ima guess,
fiberglass dash
fiberglass gearknob
am i close?
If you can cast your dash and make a copy I'd pay you $$$
Just missed out on a mint black dash for $200
the ride never ends
bolt up or seamless and what offset?
dont rivet it on please, rivets look horrible on ae86's
I'm thinking seamless. Found the 3M bonding agent designed for bonding fiberglass to metal that I want to try. The rivets would look awful with the pin stripes.
And Kev I legit have no idea on offset. That's what happens with stupid redneck nascar wheels. The go by ultra american 'backspacing'. And while I could figure out the offset from the backspacing, I still have no idea what it is lol.
I'm going to throw one of my 15x9 -0's from the front of the car on the back to see how they fit and go from there. I'm sure I can fit -15's back there. If I had money I'd get real TE37v's in 15x10 about -20. I think those would fit almost perfectly... eventually.
I also want to drop it another inch or two.
cool Im thinking of running these fenders too
Let me know what you discover when you throw your other wheels into the mix
God help me. Just spent $200 on supplies to install those fenders.
Did loadssssssssss of research to find the best way to do it. Ended up going with Lord Fusor, because they seem to be the only company that actually has a product designed to bond fiberglass panels to metal.
They also are the only one with a lifetime guarantee as long as their instructions are followed. Per the instructions, I also got 3M Dyna-Hair (filler with long fiberglass strands in it) to blend the edges and some really nice 3M Platinum Plus filler to make everything perfect. (Nothing but the absolute best products for this car).
Going to add some flex additive in the paint and everything when the time comes. I want no cracks.
Gotta pay to play
I hate how when you're a kid with dreams you think you can buy a car and do this and that for cheap. But no even proper tools cost a s**t ton of money. My entire foundation on how I will build my car is now If it breaks replace it with an upgrade and don't buy cheap things.
but yea Im really interested in this whole set up you're doing because I plan to do the same. Are you going to bare metal bond it? (I hope so lol) Please keep this updated so I can see what kind of hell I'm in for next summer
What you can do is rivet it on but counter sink the rivets so if for some reason the Lord Fusor busts(which I've had happen) they won't wall off. And fill the rivet holes so they still look rivetless. Ya feel me holmes?
The lord Fusor really shouldn't fail, and if it does its warrantied. I'm done my research and a lot of the people how rivet first get cracking around the rivets and ghosting. I think of it as like 15-20 more little metal things I need to bond to the FRP that could all vibrate around and cause cracks. I've thought a lot about all these options lol
In other news... JUST BOUGHT AERO MIRRORS FROM JAPAN!! EC Works style by Winds Auto. Gonna tint the mirrors blue for extra street cools. can't wait.
dude you gotta stop making your 86 cooler than mine, I haven't had time this summer to catch up yet
Been all over the map with the car recently.
This past weekend I was in New Jersey for Formula D. Holy f**k what a good time. I'm still sunburnt as all hell but what a fantastic event that was.
I went to the qualifying day and got to see Will Parsons and Taka do their practice and qualifying runs (neither made it unfortunately), and talked to both Will and his father about his setup. Unfortunately I didn't get to chat with Taka, he was never around when I went by his booth. At least I got to check out his car up close.
So anyway I've been trying to think about what to do with my car. One thing I'd like to do is ditch the factory pedals and go for a wilwood setup. Dual brake master cylinders. No booster with that setup so it would be super clean and feel a lot better (not to mention be infinitely more adjustable) than the stock system with the booster just deleted. Once I find a welder dude I'll see if he can weld up the fire wall to do it, since honestly its not that expensive when you are planning on redoing the brake lines anyway.
The other big thing I was considering was an engine swap (I know I already have one).
My car has the T50 5-speed with a 4.7 rear end. The equates to like 5000rpm at 70mph on the highway... aka hell. So could get a 4.3 final drive or something, but that is boring. A W58 swap IMO is a hell of a lot of work for a bit better gearing... still a 5-speed. And the LEEN 6-speed swap is like $2000.
So this got me thinking... I could just do a Beams swap. Beams engines can be had for like $1200. They come with a 6-speed, more displacement, more power, titanium valve train, and another Yamaha head. The only major obstacle is finding someone to weld up the few parts that need welding (crossmember, sump, and tranny mount). The other stuff is easy.
I also am considering an F20, but they are a lot more expensive, and all the commercially available kits require fat subframe spacers which I don't want.
The dream swap would be a 2AR-FE, like Taka and Fredric. Talk about a bulletproof engine. 2.7L with the crank from a Sienna. 50lb engine block. The thing is awesome. I am yet to see a high comp N/A ITB build either, it's always turbo. But this will not happen unless the engine falls into my lap. Way too much fabrication with an engine that costs $3000. I have no idea what transmission I could even use. Maybe a Supra Getrag? I'd want something bulletproof.
So yeah that's my updateee. I'll post some pictures of my aero mirrors in a little bit to reward you for reading.
The W58 would be the best bet for a better trans. But as for cost it seems that it would be your best bet. T3 makes some of the adapter plates for it but it'll take more than that. If you upgrade your trans I'll take your old one and drive shaft and we won't need to cut a bro deal cause I will have the cash haha
Woo!
Come to California next trip
Have you toyed with the idea of a 1uzfe swap with ITB's?
ITB's are expensive & 1UZ are originally supposed to be auto so you need tranny adapter & a whole clutch kit & flywheel for like z33 or 240, and 240 stuff sucks.
It gets expensive, turned me away from building a manual ls fo hunnit
also stuffing one in an 86? The fabrication cost for everything could be pretty costly. An F20/22 would make more sense if you wanted more immediate power
I considered both of those but decided on something new. I'll be swapping in a Honda K24.
I've considered pretty much everything:
-Turbo 20v: Character of the AE86 lost as far as I'm concerned. It needs to be N/A.
-Beams: 6th gear has the same ratio as T50 5th gear... so useless there. While the engine makes good power stock, there are few tuning options. It's hard to find a good ECU to run the dual VVTi, and even harder to find a tuner.
-2AR-FE (Scion TC engine): GREAT engine, but ZERO aftermarket support. Every TC guy goes turbo, or barely makes over 200hp. Plus its a total shot in the dark as far as swapping it goes. Only Taka has done it.
-V8: Changes the character of the car too much
-F20/F22: Too expensive and very narrow power band
So, I decided on the K24. It's much cheaper and has a much broader power band than the F20, and it has perhaps even greater tuning potential. There are kits available to bolt up the S2000 transmission, since Honda guys have been swapping K's into S2000's for the same reasons I am. The rest of the swap will be similar to a 'normal' F20 swap, which has been done 100's of times before. I will, however, try to do the swap without subframe spacers. I KNOW this is possible because I saw with my own eyes Will Parson's F20 AE86, which could not run subframe spacers due to the FD rules.
Straight out the box, the K24 with provide more power and torque than the 20v, have replacement parts more readily available, and I'll have the dreamy S2000 transmission behind it. What really sold me on this engine though is its potential. All-motor K24 builds are common in the Honda world, and 300+ N/A HP is a perfectly attainable goal for a K setup.
So yeah, a 300 horse AE86, that's still N/A, has torque, and is entirely unique (I've only seen one other K-swapped AE86 and that was a turbo FD car.) When done, this thing should kill STI's haha.
Timeframe: I plan on getting all the body work done and having the car ready for paint by the end of the summer. I all plan on finishing off the interior and getting the car running again by then. Research and planning will continue until winter, when the 20v will be pulled and sold complete, and the K24 will be swapped in. I'll be running it in a close to stock configuration (stock ECU) at first, then building it into a monster over time.
PS: I'd still get to have my ITB's and the K series doesn't sound nearly as s**tty as an H or B series.
your trans and drive shaft will need to go to a good home
luckily I have a good home
interested in seeing how this turns out
dis guy gonna put a cr-v engine in his 86 :s
But seriously, people are swapping engine from the accord/cr-v into s2000's? The more you know.
meaan
vteck 86 wot
Vtec just kicked in yo man this is going to be good
pca
the land of the honda engine powered thingys
So I'm decided to postpone the K swap until I get a second car (which will be next year, I'm going to get a 4th gen Legacy outback turbo. IMO a perfect daily).
In the mean time I'll be making the 20v run perfect. Beginning with the wiring harness.
I finally managed to decipher all that Milspec mumbo-jumbo that no one in the car industry seems to want to explain, and (unsurprisingly) found out that the connectors that big wiring guys charge $400-$500 for can be had for $150. And the tools to work with them that are supposed to be prohibitively expensive? I got mine on eBay for $60.
So, would you guys be interested in my documenting the harness build? I haven't been able to find a full 'build' for a Milspec harness, so I figure some of you may be interested. Then again it's just wiring, some people find it boring. (Personally I love it, it's very soothing for my OCD lol).
most people probably have no idea what you're talking about but I would like to see. I have a lot of harness issues coming soon
Ok. I'm glad at least someone else is interested. Hopefully I can show that wiring is nothing to be scared of.
Also if you find wiring not boring why not do all of mine and save me some time
I know nothing about cars and engines and whatever but I'd like to see it too, it's interesting and maybe I'll learn something
Working with wiring harnesses can be a real bitch, especially on more modern cars.
But if you are determined enough anyone can do it really
wirings fun as, i just soldered my speaker wires today, was fun as
Dropping by to necro with an update...
...and to direct you to my IG for further updates: @supertrickeightsix
She was just painted and is being reassembled. I need to order a few more parts then I'll have everything I need to get her roadworthy.
Dat carpet
damn chris, putting in work
the swap is probably the best idea, reliability wise. i have two friends with f20c swaps and they said they haven't had a single problem once they got everything sorted out the first time. that's honda reliability for you
Said I wouldn't update here anymore but its coming together am in love with it again
DAT CARPET THO
Car is out of scale to the carpet Tho..
Man that thing is looking real good
