seams the Skyline R32 is legal to import to america now toothygrin.gif only 10 more years befor R34 is legal...

Posted by: Sir KV Jan 4 2014, 04:09 PM

so if I get this correct, it was illegal to import one of these?

...

MURICA AND IT'S FREEDOM YES WIN

oh wait actually

Posted by: CR454 Jan 4 2014, 04:37 PM

it was, but not anymore toothygrin.gif the model has turned 25 years old and the EPA and NHSwhatever can't say anything more about it anymore!

it's a shame they had to crush that R33 though sad.gif really it's not illegal to import and own these cars. they're just hunks of steal and rubber afterall nothing illegal there. you just can't drive it until the model turns 25 years old... the government is nuts :| what can I say

the only way around that is to not consider it a car, like the japanese mini trucks being imported as Side by side UTVs

Posted by: JoviBlue Jan 4 2014, 04:44 PM

Why are they so anal about imports, i mean aren't murican car's pumping out god knows what emissions and usually the size of tanks

not hating on america, just think it's reall weird

Indeed i thought american laws about vehicles were super lax and just us europeans were getting the anal emission and import treatment? To get a car that wasnt originally sold here to where i live, you have to get it first into the Netherlands, then get it certified in Germany, and then you can finally get it into here, paying tens of thousands in the process.

luckily I live in the Netherlands toung.gif

our cars an't just big as tanks xd.gif the big 3 at one time actually made tanks!

this is a Buick!

actually the real problem is that dispute our cars size they are riddled with safety and emissions control systems. our standards are higher then other countries and as such car companies don't see it viable to import various vehicles because it would not be cost efficient to comply with our standards. this is why we don't have Defenders. Skylines, Euro Diesels, etc etc.

as such these cars are not tested and not being tested they're a grey area and considered illega.

Posted by: Jeone Jan 4 2014, 05:43 PM

Yay!

Posted by: Sir KV Jan 4 2014, 05:43 PM

so wait, leons skyline from TFATF is being crushed because they dont have VIN numbers? :/

but a car thats welded together from two different cars (front end and rear end from a different car) is legal. america sucks on that point imo

Posted by: Faяaп. Jan 4 2014, 05:45 PM

Meanwhile I'm just here in canada with all the imports you wish you had.

Posted by: CR454 Jan 4 2014, 05:51 PM

actually that would probably be illegal in states that require you to have periodic vehicle inspections xd.gif

or it's now classified as a kit car which would bypass a buttload of laws that would otherwise make it illegal :S

our government is nutters gasp.gif just know that...

Posted by: Nikola Jan 4 2014, 11:22 PM

Posted by: Madset. Jan 4 2014, 11:27 PM

Meanwhile in new zealand we have everything

weve had everything for ages haha

I always thought that the Japanese government had more stringent emissions and safety laws and standards compared to the US. Maybe the big three are afraid that their mid to high end sports cars would not keep up with the Japanese in sells, performance, etc.... Think about it. The US pumped out some s**tty sports cars in the 90's (With the exception of a small hand full). While Japan blossomed with their lineup.
What would perform/sell better. A 90's Corvette or a 90's Skyline? A 90's Mustang or an S15?

Either way. It's great to see that they are finally being allowed in the US.
Isn't the R33 already legal in the US? I see them every now and then.

Posted by: CR454 Jan 5 2014, 01:00 AM

i dunno never really looked into japanese regulations... but i do know europe has lax regulations that prevent many of their engines and models from coming to america.

we don't get the insanely effecient diesels partially because the EPA is stupid :|

anywho "Maybe the big three are afraid that their mid to high end sports cars would not keep up with the Japanese in sells, "

i don't think that's the case. you have to remember Honda and Toyota where the GM and Ford of Japanese cars here. Nissan was more like chrysler. Honda and specifically Toyota did sell a number of sports cars here! Supra Celica MR2 S2000 the Civic Sis and CRXs though that wasn't much a sports car :| anyways maybe the Z cars didn't do as well as Nissan hopped and as such they though the Skyline wsan't worth exporting?

I know this is what has been keeping GM from sending Cadillac to the outback!

Posted by: Faяaп. Jan 5 2014, 01:23 AM

Swift it's not just skylines and silvias. NA Accord isn't even same as the japanese one.

It's not just about emissions either guys.

"The reason a Skyline is illegal is because of NHTSA, DOT, and EPA regulations. There are a few R32's and R34's that were made compliant by MOTOR-EX in the late 90's early 2000's, but the company was shut down for not performing the necessary modifications on the cars. They were also expensive. After they were shut down, the US government banned all importation of the Skyline. Then later they amended this when a company petitioned for the reinstatement of the import doing the needed crash test to find out what modifications were needed. They were given a confidentiality agreement and the only skylines allowed for import are the R33's manufactured between 06/1996 and 07/1998. The only company that can modify these cars is JK TECHNOLOGIES. Another RI (registered importer) can attempt the modifications but with no access to the results from the a fore mentioned company they have to show that the work is up to the standards set by the US."

Posted by: EE8Kev Jan 5 2014, 01:42 AM

R33's were legal at one point because motorex did the crash test reports and s**t on it. But Big Bird (Yellow R33's nickname from TFAF) was illegal because the owner was trying to sell it and another r33 without vins to an undercover cop. He basically lied to the cop saying it can be registerable becuase it has a florida title blah blah blah and then the cop said f**k it he had them both seized. Set up the date with the judge and then they were sent to the crusher. R I P big bird.

So... the real question... How much does it cost to buy one of these and bring it in? I'm sure it gets taxed... or no?

Posted by: RAD Jan 14 2014, 05:32 AM

yo r32 has been here, and it's totally okay in california

Posted by: Swift Jan 14 2014, 06:32 AM

That is true. Not sure if it's fully ok. Yet I remember when SCC had an Nismo R32 in a comp going from LA to Vegas.

Posted by: Mkid Jan 14 2014, 11:25 PM

I've seen R32s at meets here in Tampa too...

Posted by: _Kevin_ Jan 16 2014, 07:28 PM

California is more civilized when it comes to regulations about emissions, most of the emission laws from Europe originated in California.

I think they were the first state that required cars to be sold with catalytic converters.

Posted by: Cooper Feb 14 2014, 01:10 PM

6th gen x chassis is way cooler than some lame nissan

America is nuts, we can have anything here. I don't see the problem anyway, as most Fords and GM cars you guys have are either european or australian imports/designed now or CKDs...

Plus throughout the past so many european cars and jap cars have been for sale over there.

Posted by: CR454 Feb 19 2014, 10:19 PM

except red rear turn signals.
and pop out headlights
and really anything bigger then a Malibu
and

Posted by: _Kevin_ Feb 19 2014, 10:38 PM

Yea and licensing and insurance is a substantial chunk of change at first
We can piggy back insurance here if the person who does the piggy back has a clean record.
Also we can get away with high emissions and ridiculous modifications

Cali has weird standards. Not the whole country. The dirty south is known for having plenty of skylines way before the actual 25 year exemption. I know plenty of shop owners who've had them. Also not all cars are marketed here. Like the FTO and Starlets. They were just never made for the US

Posted by: Noodles Feb 19 2014, 10:39 PM

how much do they cost?

here they are aound 7000 nzd depending on what model/if its a gtr etc

if its a gtr its an easy 20000nzd

Posted by: _Kevin_ Feb 19 2014, 11:02 PM

anywhere from 5-10k usd
even the importer's quote that much.
The GT-Rs however can range from 15-35K usd depending on chassis and modifications.
Though there aren't many you can still find them at car shows
