Pixel Car Art _ Automotive chat _ Jared's Civic Round 2

Posted by: J.red Aug 20 2013, 10:15 PM

A lot of you probably know by now, but the red civic is now gone. I came to the point where I decided I wanted to do something different and instead of redoing everything I already did on that car, I wanted to start from the ground up again.

So, I took a trip to Chicago to pick up a hatch.

First things first, get it cleaned up a little

Love the paint

Started tearing her down to respray the bay/core support

Radiator Refurbished

Bay is currently completely empty and working on sanding down for repaint.

Going to be a long build, I'll update things when I remember to. But this one's going to be some fun.

Yes yes yes f**k yes!

It's a track car, not a show car. Any patching like that can crack under the stresses and torsion I'm going to put this chassis under. I also don't like the completely shaved look.

Posted by: pixel 123 Aug 22 2013, 03:32 PM

turbo?

Posted by: J.red Aug 22 2013, 05:51 PM

N/a. It's a track car, not a drag car. Should be able to sit right around 220 whp by the time I get it tuned with just a good header, intake and exhaust. With a car this light, there's no real need for 450+ whp that is see with a turbo.

Posted by: Big Daddy Andy Aug 22 2013, 06:16 PM

man i would turbo it, extra horsepower is always welcome
but good luck on this build man

Posted by: J.red Aug 22 2013, 06:26 PM

For what I'm doing, I'd rather have the oem reliability. And more time is going to be made up in the corners than the straights.

It's easy to say do this and do that when its not your money you're talking about. The motor and trans alone are going to be $4000-5000 just to get it to my door step. I've still got lots more to spend on top of that just to get it in the car, wired and running. The k20a is one of the best n/a four cylinder motors of all time, so I'm going to make the best of that fact.

Posted by: Big Daddy Andy Aug 22 2013, 06:40 PM

thats why I said d16, shifty.gif
bretty cheapp engines and bretty cheap to turbo
besdies I am no telling you what to do just having a conversation

Posted by: pixel 123 Aug 24 2013, 01:28 PM

I was wondering you told me you do it your self does that include paint?

Posted by: J.red Aug 25 2013, 12:53 AM

Yes. Everything is done in our own garage.

Posted by: EE8Kev Aug 25 2013, 01:22 AM

What's the point of having 450+ HP when you can't even put half of it down to the ground without spinning your tires constantly.

N/A seems to be better for the track where you will cornering most of the time.

Good luck J! can't wait for the next update toothygrin.gif

Posted by: J.red Aug 26 2013, 02:31 AM

What's up with everyone changing their names?

I don't want a turbo. Hondas have always been some of the most well balanced n/a engines out there. And with a k20a, the power will be just about perfect for what I want to do with it. having a 400 hp turbo car would just make it more prone to understear and make it less driveable.

In other news, first primer is sprayed.

Posted by: EE8Kev Aug 26 2013, 02:42 AM

Changed my name because I didn't want to steal Rywire's name.

I was just stating the obvious to Androo and what not wink.gif

Lookin good so far J toothygrin.gif

Primer #2 last night. High Build Primer. Color should be some time tomorrow or Sunday

Also had some goodies show up this week. Once the bay is painted, suspension rebuild will commence. Still trying to source some coilovers though...having a bit of a time with that.

Posted by: J.red Sep 2 2013, 02:45 AM

Few more parts in this weekend. And color on the bay.

Posted by: Madset. Sep 2 2013, 04:30 AM

KW coilovers are nice

good for lowering and stuff

Posted by: J.red Sep 2 2013, 05:17 AM

I'm getting AMR Engineering coilovers. Shock body adjustable, 8-way adjustable damping, hypercoil springs, custom build rates and valving for my application. Race proven design. My goal for the coilovers isn't for lowering. These are 110% performance-based engineered coilovers.

Really awesome man. This thing is going to be mean when done. Any wheel plans yet? I think this color would look great with white wheels, but that might be a little to show-y. Bronze TE37v's would look pretty awesome too, i think, since the color would almost match.

Posted by: nhra1625 Sep 10 2013, 02:17 AM

please tell me, is that spoiler going to stay? If it does you need some mean ass fnf graphics

Posted by: J.red Sep 10 2013, 04:05 AM

I'm using the same wheels I had on my red car for now.

And yes, the spoiler is staying. This is being built to be a track car. The end result will be similar to this.

It's not being built to please the internet or to earn all teh cool points. I'm building it with my own purpose and I already have a solid plan for it.

well that's the point, I have neither the parts or at least $100 to spend on the car for a new parts. Everything is going to the repairments and such.
Car looks amazing and I really like your future plans. What layers of paint are you using (I mean what kind of base color and all that thing), I would like to do the same to my car, or at least some of rusted parts.

Yes, I plan to be able to drive it to evens when I feel like it, so I don't have to rely on a trailer like I do with my camaro.

For the engine bay, I first used an epoxy prime to get a good bond to the existing material, then a high build primer to get a good base for the paint. Then the bay is a single stage acrylic paint. In the fenders, I'm using a rubberized protective undercoating.

Coated the other inner fender and started working on the wiring for side #1

thts awesome dude

Posted by: J.red Sep 15 2013, 03:12 AM

Both headlights are wired up again and started working on putting the suspension back together.

Posted by: Kubason Sep 15 2013, 07:21 AM

thanks man smile2.gif

Posted by: J.red Sep 16 2013, 03:43 AM

Got new wheel bearings and ball joints into the knuckles today and pretty much rebuilt what was left of the front suspension. All that's needed is the coilovers.

Decided to throw a wheel on since it's the first time it's been to a point where I could. Just to do a little test fitting and getting a feel for fitment. That and I was just feeling a little excited and ahead of myself.

Posted by: Madset. Sep 16 2013, 07:31 AM

f**k that looks like its gonna be extremely low

maybe put a 6 inch lift kit in it so it doesnt scrape

Posted by: Brand0n Sep 16 2013, 03:04 PM

Looking amazing dude, I love your anti-lazinesss with cars.

Great attention to every part.

Posted by: J.red Sep 16 2013, 09:38 PM

That's probably not what the actual ride height is going to be. There are no coilovers on it yet, so it pretty much just let me push the wheel up however far i went. Actual ride height will probably be about 2 inches different from that, but it's hard to guess right now.

how much did you spend on that civic? (including the car)
It looks so pretty

Posted by: J.red Sep 22 2013, 01:00 AM

I'm not sure how much I have into it so far. I would guess I'm approaching about $2500 as the car is sitting in my garage right now, including the cost of the shell. And I've probably got around another $1500-1800 worth of parts that I've bought but aren't on the car yet.

Got rid of the arguments not worth arguing about between friends to clean up the thread a little. Better to just let that be in the past.

Anyways, it's been a while...lots of things have happened.

Rear brakes and suspension were built up.

Coilovers came in! best parts day I've ever had. The pictures don't even do these works of art justice.

New OEM wheel bearings since the previous owner had not put the dust caps on. No dust caps = water/dirt in bearings = bad bearings.

Bunch of other random stuff. Suspension tweaking, working on the wing, little bit of interior

PCI P1 Spec Side skirts.

little bit of dat ass.

And then today, finally getting the car back on the ground after what seems like forever. But it's really only been like a month and a half and I've only had the car for a month and a week. Seems like I've had it for much longer than that already.

Posted by: J.red Oct 27 2013, 04:51 AM

-The front has no motor in it to compress the suspension to its actual height.
-The front looks unusually high because of the lack of lip, not even the oem lip is on it.
-None of the suspension has been adjusted. I literally guessed at the coilover setting and haven't touched them since.
-The rear is almost perfect for ride height as far as I'm concerned.

Posted by: J.red Oct 27 2013, 05:20 PM

Yeah. It's a PCI wing setup which I've made a few tweaks of my own to stiffen up the mounting. Same makers of the side skirts and tow hooks that I'm using and possibly a few more things in the future. One of the top wing setups available for an eg hatch right there with j's racing.

This is a long ways from the final cut at it, suspension still needs to be adjusted to actual ride height, engine needs to be in to shape the back end of it, air dam design may change, and a few other factors. But it's at least a start and gives a little peak at the aggressiveness of it.

Quick access bumper mounts. Holds it a little better and looks a little better in my opinion. I'd also say that it probably holds the bumper in place better than the oem single screw from the inner fender.

Radiator block-off

It's going to eventually have a few gauges, switches and indicator lights. That'll all be done when I get to wiring the car, which will come after the engine.

Not much going on with the car lately. Kind of reaching a slow point.

Out of boredom, I started making some shift knobs.

Also working on a wood one and going to make a stainless one eventually, but that one will take a lot of work. Just something I'm doing for the fun of it because I don't have much else to do with the car until I get the motor.

Posted by: JoviBlue Nov 28 2013, 08:48 PM

Posted by: duncan Dec 26 2013, 06:27 AM

How long did it take to make the metal ones? I've tried making wood ones, and they don't take much long at all.

Posted by: J.red Jan 10 2014, 10:48 PM

The metal ones take forever, especially the stainless steel. Aluminum wasn't too bad.

In other news, my motor was the front and center focus of HMO's latest packaged shipments photo. Should be here before the end of January.

Posted by: J.red Jan 12 2014, 02:46 AM

i-Vtec is kind of like a dual-acting version of vtec. It has the standard dual camshaft profile like the old b series style vtec, but also has a variable cam gear which constantly varies cam timing throughout the entire rpm range, regardless of which cam profile is active. The "i" stands for intelligent-vtec.

Nice, can.t say I know a huge amount on the Vtec system, but sounds very interesting

It's a K20A from a JDM EP3 Type R. Should be around 220hp +/- 10hp at the wheels after I get it tuned with decent exhaust, intake, header.

Posted by: Noodles Jan 14 2014, 05:24 AM

keeping it na?

a supercharger would be cool

Nice, can.t say I know a huge amount on the Vtec system, but sounds very interesting

How much bhp/torque you looking to get out?

Its quite simple, the oil pressure rises with increased engine rpms, when that happends theres a secondary cam profile that will be locked to the camshaft to give the intake valve a longer opening.

I guess the i-vtecs cam adjustment happends by oil pressure too.

Nice car, i really want an EG but it will be sad because of my drive way..

Posted by: J.red Apr 5 2014, 02:29 PM

VTEC is actually controlled by the ECU. There's a vtec set point on the ECU, with engine management systems like Hondata, that set point can be adjusted. The set point is based on several variables. Most noticeably is engine RPM, but it also typically takes into account vehicle speed, oil pressure and throttle position. When the ECU triggers VTEC engagement, it sends a signal to a solenoid valve that's mounted on the cylinder head. This solenoid valve allows oil pressure to enter the flow path to engage the VTEC cam profile.

Speaking of Hondata.

Posted by: EE8Kev Apr 17 2014, 01:54 AM

f**king damn man that wiring harness is a master piece, did you put it where the A/C lines use to go?

Posted by: J.red Apr 19 2014, 05:02 PM

Yep, it runs through the firewall at the A/C location. Over the valve cover by the coil packs. And then wraps back around under the intake manifold.

Posted by: Kevin Apr 19 2014, 10:03 PM

I wish there was a harness like that for the 86 oh man it looks great

Posted by: J.red Apr 19 2014, 11:55 PM

First sunny, nice day of spring so far. So I did a little painting of the cage/roll bar and then got myself motivated enough to clean the garage to the point that I could finally push the car outside for the first time since september.

And then back inside waiting to be picked up to be taken over to LoveFab for some exhaust and intake fabrication.

Posted by: Daniel. Apr 19 2014, 11:58 PM

Absolutely stunning work so far, I envy you and your beautiful EG

Hopefully one day I'll ask you for advice on my future Civic.. smile2.gif

Fast forward a couple weeks. I've now gotten the car aligned and it drives like a dream compared to where it was from basically slapping the suspension together with total guesses on settings. I've driven her a few times. I was out of town for work for the past week, got back last night and went right to wrapping things up with paint and a few other random bits. Just need to finish up with the other seat and tidying up the interior a little now.

So, here she is in I guess what I'll call my street trim.

2 seconds, because of the magic vtec unicorn farts this thing produces.

Posted by: J.red Jun 6 2014, 11:57 PM

Lol, doesn't take very long. splitter is the longest with 4 bolts. Just because the bolts are in awkward spots. wing is also 4 bolts but can be done in less than 2 minutes.

Here's some more pictures I've collected from the past weekend.

Sunday/Track:

Posted by: Vicktator Jun 7 2014, 04:13 AM

aaw man, your car is so nice, for real, but, wait, you don't use the wing for racing(neither the splitter)???
even the colour of that thing is great, nice job mate

Posted by: Kevin Jun 7 2014, 05:29 AM

yea I was gonna ask about the wing. Why do you have a wing? That's not supposed to be a smart ass question either I really genuinely don't know and you obviously know your s**t lol

wouldn't it be more effect to work on the down force on the front of your car rather than the rear?

Posted by: J.red Jun 7 2014, 06:26 AM

It's much better to start tracking without all the extra stuff. It helps you to learn the technique and the car better. If I were to start off right away with that big splitter and the wing, I would never really learn the car and what it needs. Same reason why I went with OEM brakes instead of going straight to an aftermarket 4/6 piston big brake kit and why I'm only on 15x7 wheels with 205/50 street tires right now. Once I can't push this any further, I'll start adding the aero and changing things.

In a way, it's kind of like I'm building up my baseline. Once I get it fast like this, I'll have something to compare it to. If I add something and don't get faster, I'll know that I've still got to work on it.
