Some of you may know, I picked up an S13 a few weeks ago as a project. I still don't have a decent daily but... you know... priorities. lol
91 240SX Base.
Came with a few simple mechanical mods in addition to some ricey interior bits:
welded on muffler
AEM intake
Kazera wheels
I got it mainly because it was almost completely rust free, low miles, ran well and wasn't modded to oblivion.
I have since replaced the old and mismatched spark plugs with NGK Iridiums
Replaced the 25 year old fuel filter with a new K&N one
I've also reset the ECU since it was throwing a CEL for no reason (hasn't come back) and replaced some burnt out fuses for various unimportant bits and got new wipers!
Right now its in the shop getting the AC repaired since everything related to the AC was not working... its expensive but will be worth it because Florida is HOT!
I have new brake pads and rotors on the way since the current brakes feel very heavy and make a bit of noise/pulse when you slow down.
Hawk HPS and EBC Rotors. Got in some of the pads today.
I also ordered a new shift knob since the cheap ricey one (has markings for a 6 speed on it ) that the P/O had on it literally came unglued in the Florida heat. I ordered a TWM Phantom. Expensive, but I've heard good things.
My goal is to get this thing in tip-top shape and then start modding it from there. Or mod it as I replace things that need to be replacing anyways. End goal is to boost the KA and when/if I blow it, decide if I want to swap anything else.
Next item on the list once I finish with everything I've ordered is to replace the power steering and water pump belt and order some coil-overs and get an alignment. I'm looking at BC Racing BR with the Swift spring upgrade. I'll probably order them soon.
I'll probably keep this fairly updated as I don't think I'll keep a build thread open anywhere else. I don't think anyone cares to see another S-chassis build. lol
Still not an Evo
Congrats dude. Looking forward to more.
Awesome dude, have fun with this build!
May I ask how much you paid for the car?
inb4 andrew "ls swap and ganadors"
Nice mate, hope you dont mod it into oblivion lol
If I had a 180, that would be exactly how mine would look aha
modify it to oblivion
nice s13 bud, hard to find those in my area. I got my 86 for 2100 and looking at the market now and in a few years I stole mine haha
Glad your build direction is something simple and effective.
full gp sport or gtfo
or car modify wonder!
I want to be different. You don't often see too many function > form built S13s. I will get some "dress up" parts but nothing that will negatively effect the driving. For example, I've done the stretched tire thing on my last car. I've grown out of it. This car will have proper rubber and only as much as needed. I'm not going to be putting down enough power to warrant 10" wide wheels. lol. I will probably never go wide body for this same reason. Suspension geometry > offset. This way the car will be timeless. The stuff that was trendy 5 years ago is not the same today. However, performance is always in fashion. That black one I posted above would have been hot in 1995 and it still is today.
Awesome man nice to see you're keeping something alive
makes me slightly inspired for my next car hehe
das it mayne
+1 to hot road aero but with 1uz+itbs
d17a swap
When the KA dies and becomes a boat anchor. Swap in an RB.
Make it cool!
No swap plans for now although I'd likely just do a SR20 because I'm not looking for crazy power. Boosting the KA is the current target.
I prefer the G-Sonic kit over hot road. G-Sonic is a little cleaner IMO
PARTY TIME!
Ooh I like where you're going after the kancer.
coilovers installed and front brakes done. One of the rear calipers is seized or something. It would not compress no matter how tightly I turned it. I need to do some research. I might need to swap out the calipers. The fronts were leaking brake fluid when i compressed them but that might be by design. I'm not sure. I might need new calipers all around.
If ur goin' fer black as the final color, needs some pop of (bright af) color. Mirrors, headlight lid things shud be colored (edit: Rims too). The fifteen52 TARMAC is my favorite rim tbh, but the D9r's are the s**t on s-chassis.
nah, I'm going for a blueish-greenish gray color like this:
Who wants to help me find parts for my car? Can anyone figure out what brand these rear valences are or where they can be purchased from?
They are similar to the NISMO ones but these are much cleaner.
This is the guy, from a simple image search on google. Maybe it's in his posts if you can't figure it out any other way.
http://www.driftireland.ie/forum/showthread.php/44172-HUGE!!!!-SPEC-180sx
Yeah I had already done that but he doesn't mention the brand anywhere. I'm going to do his specific aero combo. It looks great and has a good racey look that I'm going for.
Anyways, I ended up finding them here: http://www.dorkidori.com/shop/dd_parts_valances_v3_hatch.html
Sealazone Valances
Origin Stream Line front bumper, Chuki sideskirts and the above Valances and I'm still torn between this diffuser above or this one
black one is sick bro
more aggressive yet still subtle
FYI, I figured out the issue with the rear calipers yesterday. There wasn't anything wrong with them. You just need a special attachment to twist them in.
YAY, YOU'RE NOT SKINNY ANYMORE, YOU'RE SEXY NOW...
...IN MICHAEL WE TRUST
That's hot
I like the color, you're stealing my fav color on s13's and s14's
get these whirrs
lol vick. Yeah, I gained weight because my girlfriend didn't like how skinny I was. I succeeded in getting a 6 pack tho which was my whole point for getting skinny so I was okay with it. lol
What is your fav color for these Josh? Flat black? Or the gray that I posted? You still like those wheels huh. lol. Put them on everything. I'm thinking I would like something similar to work meisters or those 5 spoke nismo wheel. a chunky 5 spoke.
damn, mkid T H I C C
the blue-grey color is hot af
yes i love those wheels the most. thicc 5-spokers would look real nice too
HOLY f**k, HELLA OLD TUNERS.
Hey guys, just wanted to update this. Sorry I've been MIA for awhile. I lost my job at the end of December and only just recently (this week) started a new one. So I was tight on money for awhile there and stopped working on this.
During that time, it started leaking brake fluid. Thank god this car has a light specifically for when the brake fluid is low, otherwise I wouldn't have known until it ran out! So I haven't been driving it for awhile either. I see a lot of stains under the master cylinder so it might be leaking from there or possibly my caliper(s). I was going to start with replacing the master cylinder anyways since I think it might be the original one and the pressure it puts out has always felt low. I'll probably order that in a few weeks.
eyy mikey glad to see you're back on your feet. still doing IT? iirc you were at a college or something before right?
replace the entire drivetrain to fix any leak
A small victory today. Seems like a huge battle though after all the effort I went through... Two brake master cylinders (first replacement one was also leaking so I had to do everything over again) and a few stripped fittings later... the 240 can finally be driven without running out of brake fluid!
The bad news... both rear caliper bleeders and two of the brake lines on the MC are stripped now. lol. Everything was just so stuck on that I had no choice. Needed to use locking pliers on the brake lines and I just gave up on the rear caliper bleeders and bled from the brake line instead. The pedal has a little bit of play because of that but its not a huge deal.
The next time something like this happens, I think I'm just going to redo the whole braking system. New lines with new fittings, new calipers and maybe even a new brake booster for the hell of it.
It just sucks because honestly I think the stock braking system with good quality pads and rotors is sufficient. It can lock up just fine as I'm sure you all have witnessed a stock S13 drifting. So in a way, it seems like a waste of money and time... but considering everything is 25 years old and I had such a hard time even just bleeding the brakes from how seized everything is... its probably time.
Anyways, hopefully some more exciting stuff will be coming in the pipeline. I'm back to trying to find new wheels as the next priority.
Good thing you fixed it, but indeed in the future it's probably wise to replace the whole thing. Just makes everything a little bit easier to work on and stuff.
The strategy I have for the miata is: anything that breaks or needs replacing, will be replaced by an improved aftermarket part. It's a slow but nice way to upgrade it.
What wheels are you looking at getting?
Shouldve just gotten rid of the brake fluid altogether. Cant run out of it if you dont have any.
Look what came in today
Nothing special. Just some Motegis. I would have preferred the wedssports that I mentioned before but it would end up costing way too much to ship them from CA to FL and even more to refinish them which they needed badly. I'll keep my eyes open for a more legit set locally. But until then, these will do.
got the images to upload.
Still need to actually test fit them and then get some tires.
finding good rims on the east coast is a pain, especially for 4x114.3
Test fit the wheels. That's not a lot of inner clearance but tires should fit if my calculations are right. Unfortunately I have to wait a bit longer to get them installed because one of my cylinders stopped firing . Ordered new spark plug wires since the one on the dead cylinder looked damaged so I hope that fixes it
unfortunately it didn't fix the issue though. lol. Either way, it needed to be done. One of the wires was messed up. I couldn't get it to fully seat over the plug. but still a functioning messed up I guess since it was probably still able to arc to the plug. Plus it helped me narrow down the current issues. Injectors are the next thing to test.
Side note: NGK spark plug wires smell pretty heavily of menthol... weird.
Bad news.
While testing swapping injectors, the O-ring on one fell off and flooded the motor when I started it up again and let it run for a bit. It hydrolocked (fuellocked?). I even had fuel coming out of my exhaust.
I didn't recognize it right away even though it was running like garbage because it was already running a cylinder down so I figured it was just running differently due to a different piston not firing until it seized up.
I took out all the spark plugs, turned off the fuel pump and let the starter turn the motor and it seemed to be turning smoothly so I think we are good unless I ended up screwing up a seal or valve.
I won't know if there is any damage until I get new injectors and try starting it again. I'm trying to find someone locally with a couple working used ones I can buy to test it. I really don't want to buy a whole new set only to find out my motor is jacked. Lets hope it fires right back up again considering it wasn't under any load and only running on two cylinders when it locked. I'm hoping under those conditions, there wasn't enough torque to cause any real damage.
Worst case scenario and its blown in one way or another, I'll probably either build the motor for boost or swap in an SR20. Whatever makes the most sense with whatever is salvageable. Lets hope its not though, I want to do one of those things at a time of my choosing!
yeh i wouldnt count on it, the piston arms could be hella bent and not to talk about the piston rings. But cant waite to hear about what happens next!
hopefully its still working!
I was able to start it again but its running super rich and running like crap. Tons of smoke, spark plugs all wet, and puddles of fuel leftover in the cylinder.
A friend of mine thinks my fuel pressure regulator may have gone bad and is dumping way too much fuel as we tested for leaks out of the fuel rail and there were none. Another friend thinks my spark might be too weak to ignite the fuel consistently. I'm going to start with replacing the fuel pressure regulator since the fuel rail is already out.
Waiting for Irma to go away...
So its been a few months and I've gotten it running on and off. Here is the rundown:
Initial issue was a dead injector. When I swapped injectors, the o-rings didn't seat right and flooded my motor. After replacing and reseating my injectors, I couldn't get it running right because the oil was full of gas. This was only an issue because the crankcase ventilation system was sucking in a ton of fumes from my oil and piping them into my intake. I could actually run my car on nothing but PCV fumes so it was pretty bad.
After an oil change, I got it started and got my wheels and tires installed.
I then decided to get my injectors flow matched and tested. Since one died, I figured the others would be on their way soon. I got that done, reinstalled them and it flooded again! I'm not entirely sure if this was because the company used the wrong size o-rings, I tried to start it with a weak battery, or my ecu didn't adjust to the higher flow of the clean injectors fast enough. Maybe a combination of all 3. Either way, I installed OEM o-rings, changed the oil again and jump-started it and it fired right up.
Here is how she sits on the new wheels and tires (Michelin Pilot Super Sports)

Looks good!
I might go a tad bit lower but keep in mind I'm going more for a build based purely on driving enjoyment. My exhaust lightly scrapes on certain local speed bumps so I think I'm almost at the point where it would start to get annoying if I went much lower.
Everything with the S Chassis has already been done so I don't particularly care if its not as low as others. I just want to enjoy driving it without it falling apart. lol
I've already gotten quite a few props from people for keeping it clean and driveable because typically you only see hotboi/stance cars or drift missiles.
Clean s-chassis and things are always really cool to see. Good work!
when are you going to pixel again
idk man. I'm not a bored teenager anymore. lol. Life gets in the way.
Ran a 10.8 in the 1/8th
Ye ye ye, but when are you drifting this thing.
Probably never. Its not set up for it at all. lol. Open diff, really sticky tires and a mostly stock KA
Replaced my bubbly, torn tint for fresh tint a few days ago. Also got sun visors that don't fall down into my face every time a hit a bump.
Wait it's been how many years since you got the lancer? And you still haven't lowered a car
Just kidding, cool stuff dude! Nice to see you're still here.
